Royal purple engine oil? As long as you're not bouncing around between synthetic/standard types you're fine.

I know royal purple transmission fluid is really good, but I highly doubt their regular oil is worth the price and hassle over mobile 1 unless you're running a modified/tuned TL.

didn't RP change there formula or something? I read about it somewhere on another forum. Either or . The one thing I don't like about RP is the color purple. It is very hard to tell if it is dirty. That is why I switched to redline. Di-ester FTW which is a class 4 group oil. Over the shelf syn are group 2. I forgot where I read it. it was probably from theoilguy thing on google.

It won't hurt a thing going between synthetic and dino oil.

Redline is an excellent oil but a small correction, it's a group V diester. Over the counter "syns" can be group III, if you're lucky a IV. No grp Vs that I know of unless you see Redline or Motul on the shelves.

Well now I feel like a douche for spreading misinformation. What fluid can't you swap back and forth?

Maybe I'm thinking of something with bikes... Man, now I've confused my self thinking of wtf fluid it is that's true for.

I'm not sure where that came from but I hear it a lot. With some of the older oil and in an engine that was sludged, running a syn could begin a cleaning process that would leave you with a plugged pickup screen. The additive packs are similar, usually the synthetics have slightly more of the good stuff but that wouldn't be a problem.

Of course, motorcycles have different requirements with wet clutches. Moly is a big no-no with a wet clutch.

Early syns (70s to maybe mid 80s) sometimes didn't have enough seal swell agents and could cause leakage but that's been cured for a long time.

Now that I think about it, the first syns weren't compatible or weren't recommended with regular oil but that was the 70s I believe.

So I'll write it again for you. There's nothing wrong with RP oil. There is also absolutely no issue with mixing both synthetic and organic/dino oils.

As for your question regarding whether it's worth it or not? That's up to you to decide. You're fine either way.

If you go with the purp or any similar brand, google a comparison between synthetics, You won't have to change it as often.

3 good ones, Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple. Expensive though.

Ah-ha! It's probably bike clutches I was thinking of. I've rebuilt a few bikes and probably read not to switch between oils.

... Maybe. My memory is horrible.

@Ihatecars Thanks for the calcification

@ OP w/e you do remember to change your oil when the time comes.

Or else your motor might look like this dumb ass motor

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1281659

The only thing more powerful then the top 3 is auto rx because of the single ester molecule, but its only an additive for dyno oil not syn and it cost $$$$$.

Correction to my last post. It uses a combo of 3 ester.

Went over everything about my car last week with Tony, the head mechanic at Acura of Manhattan. Car has 88K miles on it. At one point, he took off the oil filler cap, looked inside with a flashlight, called me over and said "Look In There, See How Clean It Is In There? That's Because You've Been Using Synthetic. I Can Smell The Difference Between Regular and Synthetic"

Me: "You Used To Recommend Mobil1, But I've Been Using Penzoil Platinum and Now NAPA's Own Brand Which Is Valvoline Synpower With NAPA's Name On It".

Dat Tony: "DOESN'T MATTER WHICH BRAND YOU USE AS LONG AS IT'S SYNTHETC".

Any other questions anyone?
