Sometimes listening only 5 minutes to my system its worth all the hard work i put into it to make it sound right.
So good system over rims any day but bad system not so sure.

Not to belabor the point, however the other issue with rims is cost, you have to lower, plus tires, plus??? I also added aspec body kit and rsb...it adds up. Also, with lowering comes other issues...alignment, camber, rubbing, and extra wear on tires...I would do it again, but it ended up being much more money and time then I had anticipated.
I have both system and rims, if I had to do it over, system would have come first

For $2500 buy both. Just do a little shopping and you should have no problem if you don't mind used equipment.
I added a 10" JL sub (new), infinity speakers (new) and a 500/1 JL amp (used)and purshased a custom made corner trunk box (used) all for less than $600. Now that leaves $1900 for rims and tires which should not be that big a deal unless you want something exotic.

The stock system in the TL isn't bad ass. It's just plain bad. There is nothing better than cruising down the highway with a nice sound system. Makes your drive all the more pleasurable. System over rims any day.
And fwiw, the stock rims on the TL (at least the TL-S) aren't BAD to look at. Not as bad as the stock system is to listen to.

^^I wouldn't say the stock TL system is bad ass but it's also far from bad. It's decent. If you are truly on the fence I'd go with the system. You'll get more pleasure out of it than rims.
As for me I don't mind the stock system or rims. It's not worth the $ and hassle.

OP, if it makes you feel any better, I have $3500 to spend and it's all going toward upgrading the sound.

Do you have manual or AT? I maxed at 146 w/ AT, only performance mod is intake. I seriously looked at all performance mods: cat back, SC, pulley's, etc.. w/ AT I'm at a disadvantage no matter what If you consistently drive fast, next best mod after system is radar detection...but, set it up stealth

I would go for the rims because warmer weather is coming soon and your ride gotta look good. JL W7 I'm working some overtime to save up for one. Whichever you choose it don't matter because your're going to have both later down the road right? Good luck bro.

Smokin blunts w/ Tupac in
I think the Sound quality of the factory system is terrible, but I would definitely get shoes before system. Wheels make the whole car.. Plus, driving around bangin block is over rated.. It's all about the shine. bang turns poeple away , shine keeps em' looking.

Safety Car
i dunno bout that dude..... my system is so loud i swear u cant be in the car when everything is thumping... last sept when i went to my house in miami and I went on ocean ave people were loving the thump. Its like they are so used to seeing pretty cars and shows offs in their rent-a-ghini's that when they see a "daily driver car" hooked up to an extreme level they love it. with shoes without shoes w/system w/o system as well. <~~~ I just prefer it all, the looks music shoes.

anyway, you will be able to get some sick wheels and sick sound system with that budget. but keep in mind that you might need to lower your car.

System first, then rims. If ur system is done right, you'll get all the attention you want without people even having to be looking at you... I still remember years ago having a full-blown party around my boy's 86 Grand Am (pushing 2 10" bazookas) in the parking lot at Jones Beach in NYC at GreekFest while all the cats with benzes and bimmer's just stared... but in Miami, you just gotta get rims at some point - the roads are just too nice...

I'd go for the rims first....it's a visual thing. Every time you go to your car, you'll say, "Man, I'm sure glad I did the rims first." Hey, the car already drives great, so go for the visual effect.

Rims before system
The weak system is tolerable for now. You gotta have the wheels! It not only changes the way it looks, but you'll feel much better about your car. You're driving something unique with your own style. Having subs is awesome but it can wait. My car is pretty hooked up because other things were priority. I'm just getting to my subs and LCD screens etc. now. I didn't mind waiting.

I made the mistake of replacing all speakers, having three amps, etc... afterwards, listened to a guys car that had tweets and mids in the front, and one sub...it blew my set-up away. So, I would lean towards less stuff with higher quality and the best installer/tuner you can find, even if you have to drive 300 miles You don't need to most expensive stuff to have a great sounding system...but don't get the flashy/blingy stuff either, it is like a pig with lipstick
