Replacement Key And Keyfob

Anybody has any idea how much a replacement key and fob costs?

I was dumb enough to put my keys on the bumper of our van and they fell off and got ran over (several times perhaps)

About $100 doesn't sound too bad... For some reason I thought it'd cost more (~$200)...

But I can't get away with $100 because I also had my set of the van's key and fob attached :-(... So I have to order both, so I'd still be shelling out about $200 (or more)

I believe the older Acura transponder is cheaper and I know they can be cloned using a fairly inexpensive tool. However I tried to do mine and when I put my key into the machine its encrypted and can't be cloned easily. So I know we charge $185 to copy key and program it. I would figure the dealership is going to charge you anywhere from $100-250 for a key. $33 seems really cheap for a key to me but it is possible I mean anything is possible. I know you can order a Remote on ebay for as little as .50 cents. I can order factory origional remotes from my supplier and we sell them for $136 and you can program them yourself. You need to specify memory 1 or 2 also. The prices above are extremely low.

Just called Karen Radley Acura in VA for a price on it. The key is $55 plus programming fee and the remote is $102 plus programming fee.

I bought a 3rd key when I got the car and the dealer wanted $100 for the key alone, but I got him to throw it in with the deal. The chip makes it expensive and you can't get a key from anyone except a dealer. I thought the fob alone was $200+.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I don't know if I want to spend $200+ on the remote. It doesn't bother us right now because I'm using my wife's remote (and I drive the car 95% of the time)... I plan to keep the car for some time so it may not matter when I eventually plan to sell it...

The Nissan van remote, on the other hand, may have to be ordered because I may sell it sooner.

Damn! If only I wasn't so dumb!

My friend lost his key and keyfob in a mall, then he bought the keyfob from ebay and ask the dealer to make a new key and reprogram everything... It was on TSX though, not sure if it would be compatible with the TL... However I believe they're the same...

JDM, Its a 2004 Quest... Haven't called either dealers to find out how much it costs... Will do it over the weekend

Contivity, thx for the link to the discussion... Looks like I can get it cheaper... Anybody bought a fob from eBay and got it to work? (I need Memory #1)... If not, I can buy it at the site mentioned in that thread...

I still need the keys (for both the van and the car)... Or maybe I can use the valet key :-)

The new keyfob does not come with a memory position in it. When you program it to the car, it will be assigned the open memory position. You can assign up to three keyfobs to the car, and each one will have its own numerical designation.

If you want to start over, just follow the instructions in the note at the end of the thread on programming, which will cancel all existing programming, and then program your new remote first, and it will be #1.

A few years ago I bought another remote from honda for my MDX for $85. It did not have the "1" or "2" like the original remotes so it was not linked to any of the memory seat positions. This wasn't a problem since the memory can be recalled manually from the door. I followed the arcane ignition sequence in the Helm's manual and was able to register it with the MDX.

As Ron stated, there is a limit to the number of fobs that can be associated with the car. For the MDX the memory is FIFO (first-in-first-out).

I think I discussed getting another key made by HAW but this would have involved sending a key to them and I didn't really need it.

When I bought the TL, one of the fobs was not programmed. The sales guy had memorized the ignition sequence and was able to program the fob in a few seconds.

I wonder if the TL would display "Driver 3 Detected" if someone programmed in a third remote?

I lost my fob and bought one a couple of weeks ago on ebay for $4.88. When I programmed it an it works fine. Just make sure the numbers match.
