Removable Side Moldings???

Hey Guys:

I was thinking of a compromise to those ugly side moldings that would allow them to be put on and taken off at will. Here what I'm thinkin:

Make the moldings into magnets, stick a thin magnet cut out to exactly fit the molding to the molding's tape adhesive. This would make the molding into a magnet and it can then be stuck or removed at will!

Now we can take them off when we want to show the car off and put them on when we are going to the store where someone is likely to choose the spot next to you to park their beater in an empty lot!

What do you guys think?

a lot of effort lol...someone with a lot of patience would probably be able to go with this...

personally, for me...i'd leave them off completely (not installing them at all) and park as far as you can in the parking lot of your destination so that no one even has the chance to hit your car

all that would result in is for you to walk more and get some exercise...either way, it's a win win situation, lol...

I would leave them off too. Plus, if they were just stuck on with magnets, what a simple job to remove them by a thief. But then, who would really want to steal them anyway?

why would you

Removable side moldings...LOL..

why bother.. just have them or not...
I did not have them on my CL S and got very little in door dings if any at all for 83k. I was not parking it at a convenience store though. It saw work, home, and the garage for the most part. Sure it was at a bar, a restaurant now and then etc...

Put them on or leave them off.. You cannot tell how your car looks when you are driving it.... That's the weird thing.. It is like having really cool wheels and tires .. Sure they look good parked but better when they are turning at 30 mph.. You cannot see them at all...

And if you leave them off and park somewhere taking up more than one space ...be careful for he people that get parking lot rage and go and scratch your car...

The very fact that you want them to be removable is reason enough not to have them at all. You're not sure if BSMs are a good idea, which is why you want them to be removable. But if they're not a good idea, then why buy them at all?

During the whole removal and installation process, you are more likely to scratch the BSM's or even your car lol...

This type of product already exists. I can't seem to find the link to it though.
Funny story... A guy bought these for his NSX but couldn't use them due to the doors being made of aluminium.

if other people hit your removable magnetized molding it will scratch your paint underneath as they move anyway...

As an alternative, you could just install the moldings on one side of the car.

The passenger side probably gets the most dings. Then, when you walk up to the car, you can approach from either side depending on whether or not you want to see it.

I have gotten used to the look of my BSMs. I would rather not have them on my car either but living and working in the city makes them a necessity. I know they are no panacea but seeing fewer dings and scratches on my car over the years negates the ugliness of the BSM IMO. To each their own.
