Released Data on Rollover Risk - TL #2!

There's an article in the NY Times today, "Regulators Release Data on Rollover Risk of Vehicles." Of the 20 cars tested, the TL ranked second best after the Mazda RX-8.

Flip

No flipping.. then where's the fun?.. the excitment of rolling your car a few times...

Think it's due to the front and rear stablizer bars that are standard?

Interestingly, I have actually seen a flipped 04 TL. Outside of my office on morning, there was an identical Anthracite/Ebony (not sure a/b the tranny) on it's side near the entrance. No idea how they managed to pull that one off. Everyone who knows me thought it was my car...I had a little fun with it.

I noticed the Beetle was ranked fourth. Of course if you flipped that one it would keep on rolling, land back on it's wheels, and you could go right on driving.

TL Won't rollover very easily

USA TODAY reports in today's paper that the NHTSA has a new study that shows our TL is one of the least likely cars to rollover. Out of all the cars shown, only the Mazda RX-8 had a better "chance of rollover" score.

Frankly, I've never been worried that the car would rollover, but it's just one more positive attribute about the car. This is the sort of thing that "Consumer Reports" will mention in it's next car issue- the TL's rating just went up another notch.

that report is crap.
they test cars like buicks and shit and they are supposed to be LESS likely to roll over? and why didn't they test any of the cars that are ususally grouped with the TL in comparisons (bmw 300, lex, etc)

They did that test by weight according to the name "heavy passenger cars", but I too question big a*s cars like the Town Car,Crown Vic and Deville that have tons of body lean. Seem like they will roll over quicker in an emergency situation to me and they all scored better than the TL.

If you look at the link that "rets" included in his post you'll see that the only car that the TL was "beaten by" is the RX-8. All other cars rated had poorer results.

This thread shows all the crash test...not as good as my Odyssey, but still good. 5 stars for all but roll over and driver side crash.

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/NCAP/Cars/2004Full.html

Actually the Odyssey also had 4 stars for roll over...the same as TL. Does that say the TL is not great...or the van is awsome?

I merged the two threads on rollover risk. Carry on, gents!

Yet again, our TL is proven safer than many other cars. Good to know! rets, I agree this should go in the garage.

Hmmm, The Tacoma rolled in their tests? We've all SEEN the commercial, right? It may have rolled (off a cliff by an angry girlfriend) but in the end it was right side up and looked PERFECT. Not a scratch. Yep, she was PISSED. That WAS real, wasn't it?

Gals and Guys,

I just thought I point out to you that those with aftermarket lowering suspensions such as the A-Spec setup should score even better, all things being equal. This obviously is attibuted to a lower center of gravity.

Interestingly enough, it was stated in the NYTimes article that manufacturers can "cheat" by equipping their cars with sloppier suspension and/or tires. This makes sense with SUVs esp. since the poorer handling will cause the vehicle to slide wide in a quick transitional manueuver vs. gripping well and pivoting on the outside tires and rolling as a result. So I guess this means that those Escalades with 22 inch rims wrapped with summer tires are even more dangerous! This scares me since these guys are always racing around and zipping in and out of traffic all the time.

Do you think our insurance rates will be adjusted because of the high rating the TL received?
