Depends on whether it is a 6 MT or a 5 AT and whether you want your car to last as long as it should.

If you have a 5 AT and want your transmission to last I would recommend you be easy on it at first, maintain traction and then push the pedal to the metal.

Well you've broken it in enough to hit VTEC. Enjoy the redline

I used to be afraid of revving my car up too high. Then I had a friend who redlined his car 20 times a day. Had no problems. So I drove my 2000 Maxima for 4 years and 65k miles, and shifted at or near redline maybe a dozen times a week. Car is fine. I assume that if they thought you could do damage at 5500 rpm, that is where they would put the redline. If you want 250k out of your engine, maybe I would avoid it, but if you plan on trading it in in a few years, I wouldn't sweat it too much.

These cars are meant to be driven to extremes. As long as you don't do it on every takeoff its ok to redline the car every once in a while. That's what VTEC is for. There is no sense in having it if you will never use it.

On the auto the best times take a little torque-braking. Step on the brake, climb your revs to around 2500 as you let go of the brake floor the accelerator. Using that trick you can drop about a half a second from just stomp and go. It will not damage your tranny if you dont rev higher than that. This was the method I used on my Tl S.

V-tec starts at 4700rpm and Redline is at 6900rpm. Can't you enjoy V-tec without redline???? I'm new to this so i'd like to know what u guys think. I'm used to babying my car so i don't like the idea of redlinng.

You can enjoy VTEC without redlining the car. It's not going to harm the car by redlining every once in a while.

I drive a Ford, have driven Fords all my life, and have always driven them hard. With all 5 Mustangs I have owned, I have yet to have a mechanical problem due to driving them hard. I have had electrical and fit and finish issues, but never engine related.

I'm not sure where you're, but if I see WDP 04TL driving slowly next to me and suddenly shaking himself anxiously in the red light, I'll yell your name and be ready to go with you.

You should get lots of fun between 4700 RPM and the redline. Besides the roaring sound, you won't get any more power out of your TL by staying at REDLINE.

Enjoy you car.

Highly recommend you try this 0-60 in manual mode when test driving a 5AT. This will let you know if you're going to have some of the check engine light problems since these seem to emerge around 4500 rpm.

I love the sound of V-tec but i love also to take care of my cars. So I think i'll stay between 4,700-6,900 to play it safe (yet still enjoy the car) But even driving it to almost 7,000 RPM makes me feel uneasy....as if i'm hurting it. But from what you guys have said Honda made cars are meant to be driven a lil harder than usual.

kinggeorge,
I agree - I don't recommend driving past redline - when I say redlining it, I meant shifting just before or at redline. I wouldn't recommend going any further than that. Fuel cutoff should stop you anyway. I did have a friend though whose car's redline started at like 7000rpm and went to 8500, and he had a chip that let it go all the way to 8500, and he did it all the time. Car was fine. Still, you won't see me doing that.

Wow. What a set of headers wouldn't do for that HP curve. Instead of dropping off it would just keep on going up until the fuel cutoff-just like in the CLS!
