Radar Detector Location

Hey Acurazine. I ordered a Escort Passport 8500 X50 Red Display, and I need to know where to put it. I have to locations and routes in mind. I'm not going to hardwire it.

Location 1: I saw this from Rick_TLS...

Location 2: I made this one up myself. I wanna somehow tuck the cord b/t the gauges and the dash controls...

Put it as high up as you can. I would vote for neither of those spots. I would put mine to the left of the wheel up in the corner of the window. I also would hardwire it.

Location 1 is pretty high. I can't hardwire it, seeing how it will have to move cars often...

make sure that the radar is at a level that it can shoot a signal out all of the windows.

I have mine high on the widshield to the right of the rear view mirror. I have the suction cups of the mounting bracket in the tinted band of the glass and have the detector in the clear just below the tinted band. I have it up there as it is difficult to see from the outside-so as not to entice anyone with sticky fingers. You don't want to mount it behind the rear view mirror as is should have line of sight to the rear window. Plus I'm not sure it would physically fit there anyway.
I have mine hardwired, but remember if you are going to be moving it from car to car, I'm guessing you will be using the coil cord and you don't want that in your way - passenger maybe, but not you. Also, I would disconnect the coil cord when you get out of your car - again not to draw attention to it. You may want to hard wire it into your TL and use the coil cord for your other car. You will also want to have two mounting brackets as it will be a pain in the butt to mount it each time you swap.
Escort is also selling a new super suction cup mount - haven't decided on that yet myself.

You can buy an extra cord for cheap. It'd look much cleaner if it was hardwired. link

As for location, top of windshield to the left of the mirror.

See Valentine 1 thread, you'll see my pics.

The radar should be right below the windshield's tint strip, on the right of the rear view mirror.

In regards to running the power line, do it the neat way, through the A-Pillar.

Bro, if you can't hard wire it I would definitely look into the Escort Solo S2. It's battery powered, but it works just as well as the Escort Passport 8550 x50. I was skeptical since it is battery powered as well, but one day to school I was convoying with one of my homies who has the 8550 x50, he was 3 car lengths in front of me. We happened to be on the phone when I heard his start beeping than a second later mine started beeping. Now I have full confidence in it. I bought some rechargeable batteries and keep a set in my vehicle just to be safe.

I'll be sure to look at it now. But what is the difference b/t right and left of the mirror?
I think that since the mirror is angled left a little bit, it would be difficult to see on the right. On the left allows it to flow w/ the mirror...

Well it's your preference, left or right, just on the left I feel like it's blocking your view, but again it is up to you. I have the V1 with a conceal display, so I guess I don't need to look at the radar as I have the small display in front of me.

If something comes up and I can hardwire it, I will. I just don't wanna take apart a bunch of dash stuff to be honest. Also, the radar detector is shared by two other people, so I don't really wanna hardwire it. Thanks for the offer. Besides...I'll have to order another cord...the coiled one can't be hardwired right?

oo ok i understand that is a good point lol. takin it from car to car. You cant wire the coiled one, you have to get the specific hardwire cord.

Location #1 with an invisicord and you will be set. The only drawback to #1 is that the visor won't have full travel but that is mitigated by popping the visor out of its bracket when needing more travel. I have my detector in #1 and love it because it's very stealth and easily heard and noticed.

hey man, i have the x50 blue hardwired. you need to take out a SINGLE panel to do it, no biggie. i bout a 2 dollar hardwire cord on ebay, easiest shit ive ever done. wire it to your rear window so when you use the window lockout button, itll turn it off - added bonus

i switch mine out often - unplug, bring the orig power cord from my glovebox into the other car. easy.

I have to say again, it is best to wire it in. If you are going to share it with 3 people it will be hard to use it at all. Put it as high as you can with the best visibility.

Invisicord

Taps into your mirror wiring in the overhead console. Took me about 10 minutes start to finish.

You can make it yourself if you want.

I like that inviscord idea. Then I can use the coil cord for the other car. Only question...if I tap it from the sunroof power...does that mean the sunroof won't work? Cuz I use my sunroof so I'd wanna keep it.

Nope, doesn't hurt a thing. There's a DIY with pictures somewhere.

When I lived in VA I used a radar detector occasionally. I had it mounted in the upper left corner of the dash behind the a-pillar. I had it mounted behind the tint strip as well, so it was very difficult for a cop (or anyone) to see. I routed the cable behind the a-pillar, down underneath the steering wheel console and over to the cigarette lighter. I was actually pulled over once and had time to rip it down and shove it in my side console before the cop saw it.

You want to of course make sure you get a detector that is undetectable by LEOs. I think the only way you can do it with a V1 is to get a magnesium case for it, from what I've heard. I used a cheaper Ebay undetectable one called "The Silver Bullet" that worked actually really well, it got good reviews.

That seems too easy. Now, I'm prolly gunna order the inviscord and and hardwire it to the mirror, I never us auto dim, due to tinted windows. Thanks.

I just went and looked to do the DIY without the install, and it seemed pretty easy. I looked at the auto dim module, and saw three wires connected to it. Do I cut all three and stick only 2 back in? Also is the 8in. one long enough or should I stick with a 12in. to be safe.

Whoa! You don't cut anything. And you won't lose existing function of the mirror, sunroof or anything either. The invisicord has probes that just slide into the existing harness connector. As is clearly states in the DIY, the green/yellow wire is the switched power wire.

Ok. 16 bucks ain't too bad. I'll leave it to the left of the rearview mirror and hardwire it to the sunroof area. But til that invisicord comes is, I'll just leave it in the first picture made, coping Rick's style.
