Edmunds just got a number "less than 116 feet" so it's as close to being verified as it will ever be. Here's an exerpt from Edmunds:

We found these Bridgestone Potenzas grippy and, combined with the solid chassis and precise steering, they allowed the TL to weave through the 600-foot slalom in a very quick 6.1 seconds — an average speed of 67.5 mph. This makes the TL one of the fastest cars we've ever taken through the cones; the fact that Acura can attain this with a front-drive platform makes this feat doubly impressive. Ride comfort is right there, too, firm and controlled.

Given what the new TL IS rather than what it isn't, I find it fascinating that so many G35 owners fail to give it any respect and have to come here and bash it. Bottom line is the TL is still FWD yet comes so damn close to putting up numbers that match the best RWD sedans in the same or a bit higher price range.

I don't think many G35 owners are replying except for myself and I don't think that i have bashed the TL in any way? I was one to say that it is a drivers race and that is all.

If that post wasn't referring to me, I am sorry.

I don't think people have bashed the TL at all. For the most part, people have been objective and even a little biased for the TL (which is expected here). I personally think the TL is the best sedan for the buck because of its combinations. Its as fast as the G35 in pure speed and handles almost as well as its RWD competitors.

On another note, I'm glad Edmunds has verified the braking numbers. The C&D test had horrible results for braking which were out of the norm (although they DID post the fastest 0-60 time). Most times confirm around 6 seconds to 60 for the manual which is plenty fast!

Turanzas are not OEM with the 6sp manual tranny. Therefoer the 5.8 (0-60) that was refered in the previous post, was done on the Potenza tires which are OEM for 6sp TL's.

However, reading the Edmunds review, it seems that it would be hard to acheive consistent numbers on the 6sp TL, since the only got 6.5 sec on (0-60) and 14.9 (1/4 mile). They also had Potenza tires. I belive the is fast, but it would take a very experienze driver to acheive consistent times.

I too own a G35 Sedan and I really love the TL ( I also own CL-s) But, I prefer to wait for AWD, then I would return to Acura once more. But I have nothing but praises about the new 04 TL. Except two little things. Make it AWD and give it more torque. Which I know Acura will do, just of matter of time.

Agree. Drivers is the main factor in this abnormal street racing. I may win today, but might lose tomorrow to another G.

Turanzas are OEM spec for the 6MT cars. Potenzas are the HPT option, and cost either $200 or $400 extra.

From what I have read, edmunds does real world acceleration tests on their cars (they don't brake torque, rev the car, shift manually on autos, etc). They just take it up to the line at idle and stomp on the gas. Kind of like a 5 - 60 test that the other magazines do....

Put a pair of slicks in the front wheels, and the TL is good for 5.5s for 0-60. Not joking.

Agree.
Edmunds' acceleration times would be the slowest you will be able to find.

Not exactly sure how edmunds did their slalom test, but if the car got through in 6.1 seconds and an average speed of 67.5 mph wouldnt that mean 0-60 in less than 6.1. They may not have done it from a stand still but would seem more appropriate for the TL.

Wow...impressive! Doesn't the G35 have more TQ than the new TL? I don't think my RS6 could do that much damage from 0-60 to a M3....

As suggested by March issue of C&D:

0-60 Times:

TL - 5.8
G35 - 6.3
BMW - 7.0
Jag - 7.1
Saab - 7.2
and Lexus 7.3.

Im glad you posted this because people tend to post the worst times for competitors and the best time for their car, I do remember M/T getting a 6.1 or 2 recently for the TL manual.

Thanks. I recently saw a 6.3 for manual from some magazine stating it had a hard time getting a good run cos of torque steer. Please don't flame. Just quoting what a magazine reviewer said. If I can find it again I will post a link. I have seen 7.2 for the Auto TL from I think it was canadian driver. I think that is way way way too high for the Acura TL auto. I think the auto should be able to mid to low 6 seconds.

Ok this has to be the worst 0-60, 1/4mile time I have seen for the 2004 Acura TL Manual. This guy defiantely does not know how to drive

Acura 3.2 TL Dynamic - V6 3.2L. (270 hp) - 6M + ABS
0-60 (6.74) 1/4 mile(14.98)

Looking at all the speed facts, it is hard to say that the TL is faster than the sedan G35. I say this because even though the most recent tests show that the TL reaches 60 faster, the G catches up in the 1/4 and surpasses the TL by 100 and 120. On a highway roll, the G would be faster. Not to mention that the G's true 60 times should be between 5.6 to 5.9 (equal to the TL's best).

DOn't really care about the actual speed as I am looking at the auto anyways (practicality) but I'm really worried about Acura's tranny's. The last gen was absolutely terrible and Honda didn't do such a great job of handling the situation (until later with the warranty). In fact, Infiniti has a better reputation in terms of customer service. I'll probably wait 6 months and see if anyone has any tranny troubles

I'm a G35 sedan owner who has been having fun on this forum recently. Understand, I have not driven a TL (yet) so I don't know which is faster - not making any claims. And you should know that I have always liked Hondas/Acuras (I've owned 4 Honda cars, 2 Acuras, 5 Honda motorcyles, and 1 Honda lawnmower - so I'm definitely not anti Acura).

Now, why I'm posting! I found out recently that the G35, like some other current cars, has a "learning" mode that adjusts shifting action, throttle response (we think) and maybe some other parameters based on the previous "100 events". In other words, different cars with different driving habits could perform somewhat differently.

Several G35 owners have reported that when they get a loaner (yes, we get them every time we take our car in for service ) that the loaner feels faster than their car. Even the service writers theorize that people driver the sh*t out of the loaners, and that's why they may actually be faster - they have "learned" to be faster.

Just something to think about.

I have to agree. Today I reset my ECU and man the car feels like I gained 50-100 more hp. I mean half throttles I am breaking hte back end loose now! So its very possible.

TL 5AT and G35 5AT are Dang Close

SB,

How did you reset the ECU????

I guess your beloved G35 isn't sooooo much faster than the TL. I'll say it again, a contest with these two cars boils downt to driver skill...

PERIOD.

I never said that the G35 Sedan was sooooo much faster. All I did was state the times from different magazines. Everyone on these forums were showing the lowest times for the G35. So I figured I would write up all the stats I could find on the car.

I do agree with you. Its a drivers race when it comes to owning an Acura TL or G35 AT or MT. If I get beat by an Acura TL, it doesn't mean I won't like my car anymore. If I beat an Acura it won't mean you won't like you car anymore. A MT Acura TL could lose to a AT G35. A MT G35 could lose to an AT Acura TL. Its all about driver skillz. And how fast you take your right foot of the brake and put it on the gas. Ok enough of my rant. Have a great weekend guys. Don't forget to get your special someone a V-day Gift

Jedmonds,

That message was more intended for SilverBullet, who seems to always jump in these "which is faster" discussions and touts the G35 as being able to just womp the TL in all instances. I was just using your data for comparison and I agree with your response wholeheartedly.

Seems to me you think the TL can just WOMP the G35. That is the only reason why I am in here. If you wouldn't think that and think like the rest of us do, they are about even, then we wouldn't have this problem.

Both sides are to blame for the communication breakdown. You have been quick to jump on others, as they have been quick to jump on you. Hell, you even stepped to me once for no reason, because you thought I was a part of the opposition.

Now that everyone seems to agree the cars are "about even" this thread can officially be deemed a waste of time. Go drive and be happy with what you have. And if you see a G35 (or a TL) on the road, try to resist the urge to continue the debate, and if you must challenge the other driver, try to do it in a sane and reasonable manner.
