Raced a early 90's SHO today

On my way home this young kid in an early 90's manual SHO was passing people on rte.4 and then we merged to a 4 lane road that goes into town. it is 2 lanes on each side and merges to 1 lane on each side when you near downtown. I pulled next to him at a stop light and it goes from 2 lanes to 1 lane. I have no idea if he was modded, but I had just got some gas at Irving(friggin hate Irving gas) and it was 91 octane instead of the 93 I ALWAYS use. my car felt very sluggish. he got me on the jump by .5 a car, I then brought it even and we were dead even up to 60, then I started slowly pulling on him and was able to get in front if him with a solid 1.5 cars between us. I was very disappointed I didn't destroy him and I think he thought he could actually beat me. He was pushing his car hard. sounded like he had a CAI, but exhaust was stock and who the hell knows if he even had any mods or he was stock. Next time I see I hope my car is running better because I know I could waste him.

street racing is bad and I felt stupid after I did it. Next time it will be at a more remote location.

That thing had to have been modded. The sho is a dog stock. If so, nice kill.

a stock MTX SHO is nothing to laugh at man. it's basically even to the TL-S stock for stock. the 1990 5MT SHO had 220hp and 200lbs of torque. most of the guys out there run 14.7-15.1 stock (less power but lighter than the TL). with some modding they can really move. guys with simple bolt on's are running mid to low 14s, and some are even lower. the FI guys are running easy 13s. i believe the type-s quarter mile is around 14.9-15.1, depending on the driver, no?

now don't get me wrong the SHO isn't fast by today's standards, but having owned a 93 ATX i know what they can do. now sbuswell should have been able to pull on him with all his mods, because i know he pulls on stock type-s's with no problem. i'm surprised that 91 has such a drastic effect on your car man.

Yeah me too. I hate Irving gas, everytime I go there my car runs like shit. It felt very sluggish and wasn't pulling nearly as hard as it normally does. Not to mention I have a bad front motor mount and my tires aren't the greatest. I believe it was an MTX SHO with the 3.0 yamaha V6, 5pds. It was definitely a stick shift. I felt disappointed even though I won because I know I should have beat him easily.

yeah, all the MTX SHOs had 3.0 yamahas. the ATX had the 3.2 yamaha with 15 extra lbs of torque to compensate for the automatic box. i had a 93 ATX before my TL. quite well modded. i loved that car.

yeah with your mods i don't think smoking an MTX would be difficult in the least. and i say again, still surprised about the gas problem. i've heard of it from other people, just still surprises me.

I had a 93 auto SHO with an exhaust, mass air meter, gutted intake resonator and K&N and the best I ever pulled was a 15.1 in the quarter. Stock it ran 15.4

I really liked mine but traded it in when I was quoted $2700 for a head gasket

I believe the 93 SHO's ,were all auto's and had the 3.2L yamaha engine 225hp, 215tq. and ran 7.3 0-60 stock. the kid I raced had a MT so it must have been 90-92.

the auto and the MT were both available for all years. you just had to search harder to find them. all autos had the 3.2 and all the MTs had the 3.0s. the body style is the only real way to tell. 92-95 were the last body style before the "bubble" shaped tauruses came out, and arguably the best looking generation out of all the taurus incarnations. 89(?)-91 were all the boxier style of early taurus body.

Oakroadsteve - yeah the ATXs were sluggish (i had one too with extensive mods, as mentioned), but if you go on shoforum much and check out the MTX guys, they are pulling impressive times. a few guys are running the quaifes and S/C with weight reduction and running 13s or better.
