Quick Advise needed!!
My dad and I are going to by a TL in about an hour. He wants a lot of the dealer installed options (Spoiler kit, wood shift knob, deck lid spoiler, etc.) My question is, when we're negotiation the price should we start with just negotiation for the car and then after that do the options; or should we start negotiating with the options from the start?
And any last minute tips too?
Thanks

Start with the car first.... then you will know exactly how much they are charging for the add ons. It is always best to know what each and everything costs so you can throw out stuff that is too high and not have to start over.
There is no norm for this. Typically it will start from the price and then if you do not get an agreement, try to get some goodies for free from the dealer. If you start with all the options then the price to start negotiating will be higher. It depends on the way how your sales person throws prices at you. He/She will try to justify his price with some free goodies. But those options will be like protection package. Nobody will throw spoiler and body kit easily. Or A-Spec for that matter.
Start with getting the best price on the car you want. then after the salesman has gone to see his boss several times and comes back with the bottom line then you can add the goodies. the prices are pretty much set and you can check them on the Acura website right in the show room. My dealer threw in the mud flaps, trunk liner and every other oil change for free. Not much but these babies are the hottest on the market and they aren't making deals.
Good luck. happy hunting

Definitely settle on the base price first. After that you should be able to get cost on accessories. If they aren't willing to go cost on the items then I would have to question whether they are the dealer to be doing business with.

All the dealer options have at least a 100% markup. If you make the deal on the base car and then pay retail for the gingerbread, you didn't get the deal you thought you did.
The number you negotiate, in my opinion, should be the bottom line number with everything included (dealer fees, document fees, etc) except for sales tax and tag charges.
If you know what the dealer's invoice is, then just add on half the retail total for the add-ons to the invoice. Eg: the trunk tray retails now for $119. It costs the dealer about $55.
The "protection package" however, is almost all air. It costs the dealer hardly anything. Eg: Pinstripes $295; dealer cost $20 (tape). (Don't get tape stripes anyway).
Those add-ons, like financing and extended warranties, can change the landscape considerably between a good deal and a not-so-good deal.
