Question on SS

Is there a safe guard when using SS that will prevent you from over revving..i.e Stop you from going into 1st gear when doing 70+MPH? Just curious?

I know it prevents me from doing so on my MT so I don't see why the AT wouldn't be the same

AT's ECU will prevent you downshifting too harsh like that, and will flash its light to warn you.

Achance, you're 6MT/5AT ??

The MT prevents you from downshifting and over-revving your engine? I know that it will be a LOT harder to get the gear into 1st or 2nd at 70 mph, but I think a dedicated idiot can get it into gear, and if they were ignoring all the signs the car was giving them, they could engage the clutch and watch their engine explode.

The AT will NOT allow you to downshift to a gear too low to handle the rpms. It is designed that way.

Not likely. You'd be very, very foolish to do any research in this area.

Nah. This is beyond the capability of the synchronizers. You'd grind them down to nothing in just a second. Then, the next time you pulled up to a light, you'd discover you couldn't get it into first anymore.

The computer has many safeguards built in to prevent harm to the engine. It will not downshift to 2nd gear at speeds over 60mph and rpm's over 4,000. It will not let you downshift into any gear if the engine rpm's will exceed the limit, and, as stated, 2nd gear is even more carefully guarded.

There is a rev limiter which will cut the engine on and off when you reach the rev limit of 6,800 rpm in any gear.

I'm not sure where we disagree cpurick. I was stating that you can in fact over-rev your engine and cause damage to your engine and your tranny (on a MT).

Actually, if your foot's off the gas pedal you can SS into 2nd above 60. And this is considerably above 4000rpm, as redline happens around 67mph.
