Question: Brake Dust Covers

I am new to this message board. I reviewed the posts in the "garage" prior to starting this post. I have a question regarding brake dust covers. I am tired of having to clean my wheels every other day because of the amount of brake dust produced by the Brembo brakes. Are these brake dust covers harmful to the brakes? I spoke to a tech. at Crown Acura and was advised that they advise against them as they can warp the rotors (even the vented covers). My mom has them on her 2001 MB CLK320. She had them installed by the MB dealer when she bought it new in '01 and has had no problems. I even took her car in for service and spoke to an MB tech. who said that all you really need to do is "watch the brakes and have them checked each time you have the car serviced." However, I wondering if any of you have had any personal experience regarding these. Thanks for any advice.

Anything that interferes with the free pasage of air around the rotors is detrimental to brake performance. I would not use them.

Agreed!

Just keep your garage well stocked with a decent quality wheel cleaner. I like Castrol's product myself. Clean the wheels at least once a week if you drive the car regularly, and you won't have a problem.

Thankfully, the stock wheels are very easy to clean as the spokes are wide open and there are no intricate patterns to clean around.

Regards,

I heard their was a liquid you can lay across the roders to decrease the amount of brake dust. I think they sell it at most auto stores now. I forget the name.

Pam?

I meant to mention this earlier. I took my Maxima in to have a tire patched (I had somehow picked up a spark plug in the rear-driver side tire). I asked the tech. there about the brake dust covers. He said to spray the back side of the wheels with Pam (yes, the cooking spray). He said that the brake dust will stick to the Pam instead of sticking to the front side of the wheel. Needless to say, I didn't try it; but, that is what he told me!

Too much heat retention! DO NOT USE. Don't you have the dark gray 18" wheels? Mine don't show dust much at all.

I got the TL as a second car (replacement for my G35). So, I didn't add any additional options. Therefore, I kept the 17" as opposed to the 18's.

I used the brake dust cover on my Jeep when I had it. There were no issues at all except I hated the way it looked. I found that if you put a coat of wax on the rim the brake dust will wash right off with water and a sponge.

I had used the "spray on" wheel cleaners on my CL OEM rims but 7 years and 180K miles later they have lost there shine and pretty much look like crap. Not sure if it was the spray or the 180K but I have never used the spray on the MDX or TL wheels.
