question about the Legend => TL and CL

OK I have a quick question. Did the TL and CL officially "replace" the Acura legend sedan and coupes? Or did Acura kill the Legend completely and came out with brand new models.

Also what does TL, CL and RL stand for.

A sales person told me TL stands for "Total Luxury" and RL stands for "Real Luxury"

The RL replaced the Legend.

The TL and CL were new to the Acura line up at the time.

The TL is actually the descendant of the Vigor. The Vigor had an inline-5 similar to that used in the original 2.5TL that was marketed sometime in the mid-90s. If you don't remember the car, don't be too surprised--it wasn't a huge success.

From the 3G Garage:

L-085: What does the "TL" stand for?
https://acurazine.com/forums/ramblings-12/hey-chicago-phoenix-atlanta-crews-91212/

Please, no more talk about what does the TL stand for or I will have to close this thread.

Which I may have to do anyway depending on how it goes.

C'mon, Ron, my contribution at least was legit!

Now I do not know the original derivation of the CL, other than that originally there was a 2.2CL and a 3.0CL. I don't believe it shared the drivetrain with the original TL because I believe the 2.2 was an inline-4, unlike the Vigor/2.5TL's inline-5. Unlike Volvo, which put a very nice inline-5 in the 850, Acura's inline-5 never got many good reviews.

I have been misunderstood.

My comments were directed towards talk of the "what does the TL stand for" only since it has been covered well and I didn't want to get it started again. If you guys think it will make things clearer I can delete this part "Which I may have to do anyway depending on how it goes." Probably never should have put that in.

I have no objections to any of the other comments about what replaced what, and this is good information for people who are not familiar with older Acura models.

1995hoo: As said, no objection to your contribution.

WdnUlik2no: No need to be sorry. Now that I have explained, can I delete your post?

Upon further research in old car magazines I found that the CL was originally built on the Accord platform. Acura wanted a two-door that was classier than the Integra.

You know, given mid-1990s Acura nomenclature, I wonder if the name Integra should have survived. The original renaming changed the Legend to the 3.5RL, the Vigor to the 2.5TL and the 3.2TL, and introduced the 2.2CL and 3.0CL. At the risk of violating Ron's edict about the meanings of the abbreviations, I will note that one of the car magazines I found that was published around that time noted that "RL" stood for "road luxury" (it was Car and Driver, so they immediately said "How it is that the tarmac has become luxurious is unclear to us") and that "TL" stood for "touring luxury." In light of all this, shouldn't the Integra have become the 1.8PL or the 1.8RR? ("PL" for "performance luxury" in view of the perception of the car as sporty; "RR" for "rice rocket")

I don't think this violates Ron's edict because I'm not asking or debating what the letters mean, just noting what was reported in a car magazine.

One of the articles I once read, oh so long ago, perhaps that same Car and Driver article, claimed Acura wanted to rename the car RL, instead of Legend, because Legend had more clout than Acura itself. That is to say, back then, people didn't think of Acura the company, but instead, either having a Legend or Integra.
