Puzzle: Too Much Technology = A Bad Thing

I'm driving home from work today. It's around 5:15 PM. As I am heading east down the highway exit, I look in my rear-view mirror.

"That's odd," I ponder. "Why does the reflection in the mirror look so dark? There's still plenty of daylight out, and the car in the mirror doesn't have its headlights on."

So, I experiment. I pressed the switch on the rear view mirror. Sure enough, the image of the car in the rear-view mirror gets brighter after a few seconds.

"Hmmm ... Is my automatic mirror dimmer failing? That would suck."

Then, I look around. "Ah-hah! So that's what's going on!"

Puzzle: What's going on?

The light sensor on the front of the mirror (facing car's front) was reading DARKER than the light sensor on the rear of the mirror (facing the car's rear).

It's cool, IMO. When I first got my car I was playing with it for a solid 30 mins.

Do you have tints in the rear which would block some of the sunlight and trick the rear view mirror in to thinking it was darker outside than it was?
