Pull the trigger on Type-S conversion?
Pull the trigger on Type-S conversion?
I have the opportunity to pick up some TypeS rims for a base 08 TL. I'm thinking if I do that, then I'll probably end up changing out the tails/side markers and maybe look into finding some dual exhaust for the pipes.
Do you think the $1500 or so is work making the base TL looks like a TypeS?
Trying to decide...

we can sit here and spend your money all day long.
the real question is:
is 1500 worth it to you?
Tails, and sidemarkers are not a problem and probably the cheapest.
the front end conversion is where you're going to spend the bulk of the money

I saw a base TL model in my area with the Type S wheels and the brembos.
The only issue was that the owner didn't follow through all the way. He still needed the tails, the side markers, and the quad exhaust. I'm sure he was missing a few more things though.
I didn't get a chance to thoroughly check his car out because we were both at the gas station and I just took a glance at his car.
I think you should buy all the items you need for the conversion all at once if you can!
also, if you really are from Hawaii, I saw a clean title cbp TL-S being sold for 15k. It only had 8k miles on it. Not sure if it's sold already but I thought that was such a steal. I got mine for 23k with 28k miles run in.
Best of luck!

^brembos came on the 6MT base TL's.
not everyone wants to upgrade it to look like a TL-S.
I have tl-s sidemarkers and brembo brakes.
but I'm no wanna be.
actually, my car was born 09/06. it could have well been an 07 type-s.

It takes more than 1500.
My front end conversion was ~$800 just in parts...and thats with a discount, not including painting the lip and the bumper DGP.
Then the rear was another 500$ for the bumper and lip, just in parts. plus tail lights, side markers, etc etc. Plus labor, again.
Also, the exhaust will cost you a lot. I got really lucky and found one on craigslist locally, but it took time and patience waiting.
The only way I found it to be financially feasible was because I rear ended someone and used the insurance money to do the conversion. Then for the rear, I got rear ended and insurance paid again.
Basic:
$250 Front bumper
$250 front lip
$200 for fogs (aftermarket)
$200 misc (grill, emblems, etc.)
$150 JNC blacked out headlights to look like Type-S
$250 rear bumper
$250 rear lip
$150 Depo tails
$100 sidemarkers
~$100 in misc bumper garnishes
$400-800 Type-S quads
Plus Type-S rims, which can be anywhere from $300-$800
Thats what basically you're looking at. And those are all discounted OEM parts (except the depo lights). Again, you're looking at labor to paint everything and install it if you can't do it yourself.
Goodluck.

Ahhhh... ok, just making sure
because I just had to settle for a '08 AT, while I was looking for a MT but was not to interested in paying extra for the "Type S" stuff... Not that I do not like, just more then I wanted to spend on a DD

maybe i'm missing something here, but wouldn't it make more sense financially to just sell/trade yours for a real type-s (granted I see you're in Hawaii and not sure how common they are there)? In the long run, you'll probably SAVE money. I'd imagine a comparable '08 base and '08 type-S would have a price difference of $4-5k.
Just on the outside aesthetics alone, you're looking at rims/tires + new front/rear bumpers + tailights + headlights + foglights + side markers + grill + quads + misc trim/insert pieces... and lastly, you can't forget the badge.
Let's just say ~$3k for all of that. For an additional $2k, you could have the real thing including the interior + motor.
Also DaeHanMeenGuk mentioned a Type-S for $15k. I'd definitely check that out.

In case you're still interested, I found it on cars.com again. I tinyurl'd it because copy/pasting the whole address would've resulted in a very long string of text. Check it out!

I heavily modded a 2006 WDP TL 6-speed manual to look like a Type-S and then some. It cost me ALOT of money. I suggest buying an 07-08 Type-S. But if you LOVE your car, you can buy Type-S tail lights, rear side markers, and used Type-S wheels, that shouldn;t cost too much. I did that PLUS ALOT more.
I would say no. Only because I'm not really a fan of Base model TLs trying to look Type-S.
I wouldn't mind doing the sidemarkers, blacked out headlights, or type-s trunk lip spoiler. But a Base putting on a Type-S front bumper, rear bumper, type-s quads, type-s wheels is bleh.
I could understand getting a Type-S rear A-Spec lip so you can fit aftermarket quad exhausts in the future, but doing a complete Type-S conversion on a Base model is lame.
That $1500 is better off spent elsewhere like on mods that will actually make your car almost on the same level of performance as a stock Type-S

To each their own.
The Type S is nice but cost and availability are a factor.
The Type S vs an 04-06 MT is not a negligible difference performance wise with a few mods.
As an 06 Aspect owner I prefer my body style to the Type S.
If you want performance go MT or MT Type S
If your happy with your car just do some aesthetic mods and keep it clean.
EDIT
Don't bother getting the quad type s.
PCD or HFPCD and JPIPE instead and you'll be flying high.

To clarify.
I'm not looking for the performance of a Type S. I was looking for opinions on the appearance value of making a base look like a Type S. Right now, it would only focus on the wheels, lights, and possibly exhaust tips (not changing the entire exhaust).
What do you think? Worth it? It seems a little cosmetic for the value, but the wheels are a pretty good deal for me right now.
BTW: That Type S on sale in Hawaii. Something is fishy about that. Acura has a CPO Types S w/ 40k for $26 listed on their page. The site that is listing the $17 is some place I have never even heard of. And that is saying something since this island is pretty small.

Then instead of looking like a Base TL, it will look just like all the other Type S out there.
Its not a Type S, so why make it look like one? Same if you had a BMW 335i. Its not an M3, why do people try to make theirs look like an M3?
IMO its super ricer to do this. Just doesn't make sense...

If you think it'll make you happy then by all means go for it.
Keep in mind that if you do the Type-S conversion, it's going to look silly if you have stock wheels and the stock muffler.
I'm not a big fan of the Type-S A-Spec lip because I think there's too much going on. I did the 07-08 conversion because I found a full bumper with everything for really cheap. I would look around the Black Market and find used parts to keep costs low.

in the end, it is your desicion. I think you should do what you like instead of asking people about what you should do
i have an 05 tl and i did the type s conversion simply because i like the type s look. I have everything except the brembo brakes, i didn't get them because 1k didn't sound reasonable for me. Do i want them? sometimes, but the more i think about it they more i realize that they are just brakes that have the acura logo on it. Could I have gotten a type s? yes but acura wouldn't take my downpayment and 1k every months becuase of my status (international student) so i went with the car i have now.
I love the car more than i love my girl

because they couldn't afford a M3 and wanna make people THINK they drive a M3, especially to those people who dunno shit about cars, it turns they spend all their money trying to to make their 335, 330, 328 to look like M3 and dont have anything left in their pockets, just look at those ricers getting their gas at those shitty ass gas station....not surprised...if u gonna give it shitty ass gas then please get a shitty ass car!!!
In My Opinion. I prefer the Type-S tail lights, I prefer the grey matching side markers. IMO There is nothing wrong with better looking tail lights, matching side markers, a Type-S rear A-Spec lip to fit a quad tip catback. I did all these mods on my WDP TL Nav 6-speed myself. I also added Tein SS coilovers, Progess 24mm RSB, a J-Pipe, and ATLP quads. AND many more things.
If YOU dont go TOO far $$$$ I think its a great idea. = Type-S tail lights, rear side markers, Rear A-spec lip with quad tip exhaust. Then its great.
Even Tein Basic coilovers, cleared headlights, and some V-LED LED's. are fine.
I have owned 2-2006 TL's with Nav. 1-auto, and 1- manual. I have also owned a new 2007 Type-S auto. I much more prefer the Type-S, but they are hard to find locally where you live with low miles in great condition without a VERY HIGH price.
Maybe sit down and write down Pro's and Con's, and get the calculator out.
Just suggestions my Friend, Just Suggestions

Its just people who CANNOT afford the EXPENSIVE model and want to make it look better, and maybe perform better. No big deal.

I'd rather have a badazz modded base than a wanna be type S...

DUH!
Believe it or not, I ended up removing the type s tails (oem) because I felt like a wanna be.

i think there's quite a difference between "modding because you like the look" and wannabe. you can mod it to look like a type-s, but never state it is a type-s. Or you can mod it to look like a type-s, and slap the badge on there. Once you do that, it's a declaration and you become a wannabe. but that's just me.

Well, I got a killer deal on my car (and the first owner was my stepdad, so a type s was never an option). Then again, I paid 1/3 of the price of one new.
IF I were in the market for a TL, I agree...I would have gone for a Type S all day long. Learned that lesson early on when I got an LX 1997 Accord to save a few bucks...I would drool over the EX's with leather, dual exhaust tips and real rims all day long.

That's why I did the 07 base front conversion
Here's the fake type s link. The title is "Stop It. Please...".
Yeah my opinion is mod it the way you want but don't slap a Type S sign on it though.
