Proud new owner

Hey all, I'm now a proud new owner of an 05 TL. Sorry I dont know the exact color name but I got the silver with ebony interior. I came from having a VW GTI VR6. Torque steer is not new to me

I fall in love with the car more and more every minute. No complaints whatsoever on the features and physical aspects of the car, except the OEM tires (bridgestones) which i've read a lot about on this forum. I've decided to swap them out and try to sell them on ebay.

My real question is about gas mileage. I've been reading a lot on here about people getting average gas mileage in the 25 mpg range. I picked up the car last night with a full tank of gas. After driving a total of 100 miles the gas tank is half empty. I checked the trip computer and it says I was getting an average of 20 mpg. I really hope that putting super will help that figure out a lot more. I've read a whole bunch of threads on this but i'm kinda using this thread to introduce myself and get some more opinions. My driving style between yesteday and today was extreme grandma....so I don't understand how it is doing so poorly. The sticker says I should be able to get 20 city and 29 highway. I was really hoping to get an average of 25 mpg....

During break in the milage is really bad. I was averaging 16-17 so consider yourself lucky. Our average overall is now between 23-25.

I have an '04 manual tranny TL and my work commuting mileage in the summer averages in the 27 MPG range and has just about touched 28 (actually 27.98). In the colder months, it drops off to around 25-26 for work commute.

On the highway, the best I've ever gotten was this past September on vacation. With the A/C running the entire time and outside temperatures around 86 degrees, no special gas-saving techniques used and moderately heavy traffic, I managed 33.94 MPG; and this was calculated, not from the MID.

When my car was new, my in-town mileage never dropped under 23 MPG.

Welcome banggooooooo!

My, what good taste you have!

Yes, break in will be on the low side. Also, do you have 5AT or 6MT?

One thing to keep in mind is the TLs mileage will vary a lot on your driving habits. If you drive spiritedly, expect closer to 20mpg (some report lower). If you drive more with a little less lead in your foot, and cruise some highways, the TL will shine in the upper 20's. On the highway I have recorded over 30mpg.

I average 24-26 mpg / tank pretty consistantly. My driving is 50% city, 50% highway. I would characterize my driving style as 60% conservative 25% spirited and 15% possessed. I also find the MID's rolling MPG average fairly accurate. It is a cummulative reading for fuel used, not an 'instant' reading.

Other factors to consider is your fuel used (I use 91 octtane), climate conditions and season refining changes will affect your fuel economy.

I love the flexibilty the TL offers. You can drive it like a sports car or turnpike cruiser. Somedays I feel like driving my sports car, other days a family sedan on a highway cruise. I like the way the TL responds by satisfying the range of performance, comfort and economy. As much as the TL is engineered to 'learn' your driving habits, you will also 'learn' to use the TLs range of driving characteristics.

Who knew schizophrenia was such a good thing?

Yeah i got a 5AT. From what I've heard the break in period will give pretty bad mileage. I haven't filled up yet, but I believe the stealership put in regular.

Welcome
Remember YMMV. It will likey take you a few thousand miles minimum for your mileage to increase gradually. I spend lots of time in stop & go traffic. My average MPG is about 17.5

I was getting about 18-19 mpg after I picked up my car, and now after 7300 miles I am up to 22-23 mpg and I think it might even go up a little more. So don't worry about that..it seems like its a pretty common things with new cars. Same thing happened with my brothers Civic or maybe its common to Honda cars

Just did a moderate return trip, 99% highway, and got 7 L/100K (approx 33mpg). Total distance was 325 km (200 miles), and the car has about 900 miles on the odometer. This matches the rated spec for highway and I can't imagine it getting much beter. Gas was 91 octane.
