Programming a new key!

Is there any way to program a new OEM key yourself. My Acura dealer wants $50 for the key and 95$ to program it. Sounds like a screw job to me. Do I have any alternatives?

Do a search. I believe someone posted the instructions for reprogramming the key.

that's for just reprogramming a key fob, the actual key that goes into the ignition needs to be reprogrammed too.

I did a search. There is no info that I have been able to find. Surely this is something that could be done w/o the dealer and the ridculous 95$ charge.

The only way to do it according to the tech I talked to when I needed an extra key for my remote start is that you need a special hand held computer that I believe hooks directly into the diagnostics port on your car and then insert the key into the comp. And this comp is only available to Acura dealers. Granted they would say that anyways so that they get the money for the job, but they never charged me for the key or the programming. (May have had something to do with the fact that they accidently scratched my trunk when installing the deck lid spoiler.)

Street Keys Ebay Link

If you go there, you can get keys for the TL. I got 1 key for like $39 bucks and you can get 2 keys cut and programed for $60 dollars after you buy the keys. That's what I just did.

Yup! It sure does look OEM to me. The site says they get these keys at a large discount. The key even has that little "v" etched into the metal base of the key.

I'm excitied..I mean...$150 dollars to buy 1 key and get it cut/programed is a joke....

once again...Honda/Acura has our necks in a vice.....

I guess you have to make money somewhere....GM makes it on replacement parts...Acura makes it on keys..

well.. its becoming more of a common thing for cars to have chip embedded keys requiring dealer programming to start the car.. A good number of GM cars are chipped, and half of the Ford line has a chip in the key. All of the upperscale manufactures have programmed keys now..

that $150 stops alot of theives from stealing your ride though. without the immobilizer, there would be alot less acura on the road. just look @ integra theft in the past 10years, compare it to TL theft. not even close.
