Preventing Dings On Your Tl In A 2 Car Garage

I think I created the perfect invention for stopping the car parked next to you in the garage, from dinging your TL, when their door opens.

What I did was buy that styrofoam insulation ( approx. 2ft x 3ft, about 1/2in. thick ). It comes in a package of about 5 or 6 pieces. Home Depot has it.

Go to the hardware store and buy 2 magnetic hooks. Should be stronger than the refrigerator types.

While your there, pickup some self- adhesive felt. Its a green color in a package.

Cut the felt to fit the base of the magnetic hooks. The magnetic base will attach on your car.

Punch two holes into the styrofoam at either end, and tie a piece of string about 1 -2 ft in length.

Hang the styrofoam where the other car`s door would hit your TL, then tie the string to the magnetic hooks, and let the hooks attach to your car, letting the styrofoam hang off the side.

The magnets won`t scratch your car with the felt. And YOU can place the barrier where you think best. Instead of those hanging kinds they sell in the magazines.

I found the best place for the magnets is to attach them is on the door frame.

It works like a charm. Also since its styrofoam, when the other person opens their door and ( by mistake !), hits the foam, you`ll see a dent in the foam and think, "that could`ve been the car !")

gbriank showed me something he bought somewhere that already is made to do this. It's a magnetic plastic strip of plastic you just attach to the side of your car. Pretty simple.

I have another idea though that's even simpler... tape pillows to the side of the car... errr... wait... I mean...for $29.95, I will send you a kit where you can do this!

I have a simpler solution to the problem. In our two car garage we keep one of our daily drivers on the left. I don't let anyone get into or out of the car in the garage. I keep my sports car on the right and don't let anyone else drive it (especially into the garage). If I take a passenger, they have to wait until I pull it out of the garage to get it. With this arrangement, I'm the only person that has any possibility of "dinging" either car and I'm extremely careful. Our other daily driver sits in the driveway so it isn't a problem.

Our 2nd car is a Chrysler T&C. Only my wife gets in the driver's door (she knows to be careful) and the sliding doors prohibit any chance of the kids doing any damage. If you have to have a 2nd car, get a minivan!

The pillows that I personally use and recommend are kingsize goosedown pillows with 300 thread count pillow cases. I take a big strap and go around and underneath my whole car and crank them tight.

Of course I've taken these pillows to my local body shop and have had them sprayed to match the color of my car. I also use goretex covers for them when the weather is threatening so they can breathe but still repel water. One drawback to this method though is that when I park downtown for a few hours and come back to my car sometimes I find bums asleep with their heads up against the pillows.

Those hanging bumpers stink. You have to park in the exact same spot. Kids hang on them and get hanged, or pull them down.

My idea works great with the magnets

I can see why it took 3 and a half months to come up with that profound idea.

We back one car in ad the other one nose in so that way we can get as much distance between them as possible for the drivers doors. Anyone else getting in on the passenger sides will outside.

That's how my neighbor and I park. Want to see something scary?

I have a pillar on my left and neighbor on my right. I have to creep up and touch the nose to the wall so my door clears the pillar when it opens. My license plate frame takes the hit so I've never scratched the car. Thank goodness I'm thin or I'd never be able to get out of my car!

Ah the joys of city life!

Kind of scary, narnia. Is that rude pillar right on the left of the B-pillar of your car? Or it's the left of the rear door?

I guess the space behind your car isn't any better, I see why you said some coarse neighbors would make horrid 3-points turn in the garage.

My garage (single family home) is large so I can completely open my driver's door all the way and there's still nearly a foot between its edge and my wife's passenger door. She knows and accepts the fact that I'm VERY anal about my cars and she respects that. Anyway, she hates to get dings on her Bimmer, too.

Woohh thats tight I see you live In NYC the land of tight spaces and and land is precious, I had a similiar spot when we lived in Chicago a few years ago. Another city with tight spots and land is precious and I paid big money for that spot not including all of the dings from my neighbors Tahoe!

I don't allow my wife to park in the garage. She parks her Jeep in the driveway.

another idea . . .

if you've got a two car garage,

1. practice with both vehicles and establish adequate space between them so as to prevent obvious door ding damage under normal opening conditions

2. Noting number one, back the cars up leaving about 4 inches clearance between the gargage door and the bumpers

2. carefully and with a steady hand less a 12 pack of beer, make a mark on the ceiling where you want to set a string attached to a tennis ball from the ceiling just barely touching your windshield in line with your steering wheel.

3. pull the cars out and hang the string

4. pull the cars out and test, alligning your steering wheel to the ball. adjust if necessary

5. Draw a happy face on the ball so when you pull in you can be happy

Then, daily as you pull into the garage, no more guessing. wala you're done . . . knowing that your preventing dings.

I have this and it works great. But then again, I don't have kids and a wife that likes her cars dentless too.
