POLL: Does your TL Type S Ping?
While test driving numerous TL Type S's I've noticed more often then not they ping. I've also seen a post and a few comments concerning the pinging issue. Is this a problem for the Type S?

Ping Yes or No?
What gas and grade do you use?

My 2007 TL type S continuously pings during a steady state cruise condition, and stops pinging when accelerating. I have only used 93 octane fuel, and from multiple vendors, but Chevron is my most commonly used fuel. 3200 miles on the car.

I've got a 06 TL (6MT) and it'll ping if I really load it down.
I believe that the reason for the subsided pinging during acceleration is due to the knock sensor catching it and retarding the ignition timing. The lighter pinging that I hear during a steady state cruise may not be intense enough to be detected by the knock sensor. If the AC is on, radio is blasting, and the windows are up, then this pre-ignition ping will not be heard, but if I drive with the windows down with no AC or radio, then I can hear it almost continously.
Just had the TL-S to the dealer today for the "pinging" problem.
Occasionally it is "ping" free, which leads me to beleive it is not a fuel issue.
We have only used 91 octane from both Shell and Unocal, which is the highest available to us in the San Diego area.
The pinging is very apparent at mid to upper rpm range under aggresive acceleration. It also has been noticable on level ground, even going downhill as long as the throttle is applied.
Dealer says they could not reproduce it, so now I await a call to have an Acura rep drive it with me. Good, I can have him listen to the noisy rear suspension too!

no pings for me so far with about 400 miles ... but then again, I'm not a lead-foot kind of drivers ... also my stereo is always on blasting ... LOL
will try acc. a bit harder tonight with the XM rave station off ...

No Pinging yet.
Pinging is preignition of the fuel/air mixture in the cylinder. This generally happens when the fuel has too low of an octane rating. (Hence why our cars need 91+ octane)
I believe that the cars electronics will retard the timing if pinging is detected. This helps, but the trade off is a loss of power.

i have seen only seen 1 tl-s come in for a pinging opon a test drive during town driving and hard acceleration no ping but the intreasting thing is it will ping at 5k and under a heavy load like a on ramp to the freeway on a incline. opon futher looking i found some reciepts from diffrent gas station's and the customer has been running mid grade from a cheapy gas station. i would sugest only using shell and chevron 92 only i have seen a service news or somthing in regards to the gas brand i wil ltry to dig it up.
Pinging here at 3000-4000 rpm range in second, third and fourth gear. Just using premium gas from different brands. I can reproduce it very easily in partial throttle and in an inclined road even when the car is well warmed up. I have a 2007 TL-S 6 speed manual.
No pinging yet at 1,500 miles. In fact I can run in 6th gear at about 40 MPH and have no lugging or pinging in my '07 TLS 6MT (and get great mileage BTW...averaging 27 in rural driving, 31 MPG highway, and barely broken in!).
My TL-S pings a few times during mild acceleration especially on an incline. I have about 8500 miles on it. I use premium exclusively and switched over to Shell V10 exclusively about 3 months ago. It seems to have helped a bit but it still happens. When I had the car in for service last, I brought it to their attention but the tech could not reproduce it. They said they checked the computer for a log of pinging but did not see it. Also said that it is on the hairy edge of pinging and that a couple of pings occasionaly was to be expected. I don't like the idea of it if it will do damage. And it sounds like it will in the long run.

Funny I drive an RL, which is a similar motor to the S and it never pings. The S is tweaked as much as it can, and it runs hotter. Still its a problem that Honda needs to address. I am surprised to hear about this.

I thought the "official" "SAE Net" numbers were 286 for the TL-S and 290 for the RL.

Dealer just explained the pinging to me..
I have an 06 myself, but we picked up and 07 with NAVI for my wife. We had major pinging issues with it when we first picked it up about 4 months ago. Took it to the dealer several times and were finally told that it was valve chatter. We had the choice of a quick fix which was installing what essentially amounted to spacers on the valves, or a new motor. We reviewed our options with the dealer, and the zone rep and ended up going with a new motor. You all may want to talk to your dealer reps about it.

They will make a greater effort to resolve the issue if more TL-S owners speak up on this.
I have posted this numerous times. Why doesn't someone fill up on 100 unleaded and find out once and for all if this is detonation or not. It is very simple. Valve chatter? Spacers on the valves? I won't even go there.
I have 07 TL Type-S 6MT with less than 1000 miles on. My engine makes Spinning Noise (like a high pitch propeller sound) when I turn the ignition on. Moving or not moving, the sound does not go away. Does that consider as pinging noise?
Today, I had my windows down and drove next to a tall barrier, so the sound bounces off of it and back into the car. I revved to 5k rpms and let off. The pinging noise is almost the same volume as the engine. It's loud.
Maybe I should take my car to the dealer and drive next to a tall barrier with the windows down and let them hear for themselves.

Have been battling with Acura corporate in Canada for over six months now. They do acknowledge that they have a problem but all I ever get is that they are waiting for a fix. I am considering going to CAMVAP but not sure if this is my best course of action......... Has anyone started any form of legal action?
I have been using Sunoco 94 Octane which does help a bit, but is expensive!

It doesn't stop, either, with those dinky little rotors, even though Acura would have us believe otherwise.
So it doesn't accelerate without pinging and it stops as well as a new CRV - assuming comparable rubber.
What exactly does this car do - dynamically speaking?
It's comfortable inside, the stereo is pretty decent and it looks OK. The list gets short after that.
