Plasti-Dip Painted Grill

Anyone ever consider this? I mean, it sounds like an easy, quick, afforable way to paint your grill yourself, and then even be reversible. I have an AM 05 TL and am considering doing this, along with my rear emblem and trunk trim.

Any thoughts on Pros/Cons regarding it - maybe even from someone who is very familiar with plasti dip?

What do you think the advanmtages would be to plasti-dipping it instead of vinvyl (besides ease of application) - if there are any....

Wow that looks great.

Did you just get a can of the black and spray away? I mean I know you taped off the area first, but theres no need to acually remove that bumper to do this, is there? I know the extra just peels off, but wasnt sure if it would be hard to acually tape all of the sourrounding areas off since theres lots of knooks and crannys around that area.

I Actually did this while I'm working on the headlights so I tookthe grille apart and tapes the bumper off. I did get some over spray and wiped it off but took a little elbow grease. Ive read if you don't have enough plasti dip it'll be very hard for it to come off. So make sure you use enough. I've used 4 coats.

Its basically a rubberized material in a spray form, usually used to add grip to tools. I bought two cans from home depot. $5/ea. I think, only used about 3/4 of a can. Spray a light layer first cause it is kind of runny. Then got thicker the last 3. I didn't do much prep work, just washed it with dawn dish soap to get any wax or other materials off. Sprayed, let sit for half hour then do three more coats just like that. Let sit for a few hours I suppose. Mine has sat in a heated garage for about a month.

It's spray on plastic. Get from paint stores or hardward section of Walmart etc. Looks GREAT. Kinda gives the grill an updated hybrid 09 look. This is how I expected the new grill to look. I wish our state allowed tinted headlights. It's very Illegal in NC.

Yes, it will work on anything basically. You can plasti dip your rims if you wanted to do so.

if you're referring to my pics, I don't have headlights in my car, they're not tinted just headlightless

Yeah, basically works on anything. I've seen people use it from Plasti dipping emblems, to plasti dipping their whole car.

A lot of 2nd gen TL and other Acura models use it on window trim so it allows for rims that don't have a polished lip. Looks better wirg shadowline style trim.

that would be nice to use to paint the dark gray parts of the a-spec kit too then so it matches the grill. Shit I am going to get this today. It's a bitch finding it in Canada tho, one store in the whole city has it. Damn

quick question. If you mask off some parts with painters tape would it be easy to take the tape off?

I'd imagine it should be easy to take off.

I wanna see your grill if/when you plasti-dip it.

It'll give me an idea of how it looks with SSM =P

Post up those pics when you get done! Might have to knock this out if it looks good on SSM and is easy.

couldn't do this this weekend but I will try and do it this week. it's been so freaking cold here (-31 Celsius) and heated garage is not that warm. Wednesday is gonna be 0 Celsius so I am gonna do it then. Probably gonna take off the bumper today and tape everything off and stuff.

so last night I tried taking my bumper off and it seems to be such a hassle that it might not be worth it doing this. All the clips and bolts are in such a bad condition and everything is covered in mud and dust and rust (bolts) from the snow and sand they put on the roads. I either won't to this or it will have to be done on the car and I will have to mask it off REALLY well to do this.

When I removed my bumper I ended up breaking off one bolt which was rusted to its fastener. The fastener was embedded in the plastic splash guard which simply twists and breaks if the bolt is rusted in place at all. Lousy design IMO. I can imagine if all of your bolts are like that it will be a real nightmare. You might want to clean the area out real good at a self-serve car wash with a pressure washer, and start spraying down the bolts with some PB Blaster or something. Don't give in to the cancerous rust.

It's just the bolts that are like that. And also there is all this dirty and grime of the road and dust, and there is just no way to clean that at the moment. It was -31 degrees Celsius 2 days ago. None of the clips can pop out. They are all caked up. It's just not worth the hassle at the moment.

Yeah definitely not at -31C. If you're ambitious when the weather improves you might want to attack that and replace the bolts with new before they completely seize up (if they haven't already)!

There is no reason to take the bumper off to do this. There are many other threads about plasti dip - it is as temporarily permanent as they come. If you over spray, simply peel off the excess. Thats what makes this easy to do.

If you are going through the trouble of taking your bumper off, then theres no reason to use plasti dip - you may as well just use real paint, atleast IMO.

Lol I hear ya man. I did my 3x3 ATF flush a few weeks ago along with oil change. All the clips holding the underbody piece covering the ATF drain bolt had so much grime and salt in them. I ended up deforming all of the clips to get them off. When I was done with everything, I was covered in sand. So much had fallen on my face I was practically eating the ground. I hate winter.

We'll taking the bumper off would be nice just for a piece of mind and so I can change out my light bulbs as well. But I am gonna go with not removing the bumper way. I washed the grill last night with soapy water and let it dry all off. Today I am gonna tape off the grill and cover everything I want protected because I HATE clean up. The only thing is the badge, I wanna keep it chrome looking and not sure how I am gonna tape that off. It's gonna be a pain, and I can't take it off because I can't take the bumper off. Maybe I can break it off and just replace it with a new one. Is it attached by screws or just clips that can be pushed in if I do break it?

yea man this is absolutely ridiculous. -31 C outside and snow piles 8 feet high everywhere. And roads are covered with sand that forms into mud when you park the car in the garage.

hey we still doing the detailing when the snow goes away? Spring sometime?

i did this a couple days ago and i just used tape to cover the badge; it's a bitch to do cuz you need to make sure you get the edges perfect but it's worth it in the end!
just make sure you take off the tape after you do the last coat while the plastidip's still wet.

Woah...so this Plasti-Dip will come off paint with no problems? That can't be to hard to tape everything off and tape on the "A-ringed" emblem and spray away!

What about the grill behind it and the radiator, etc?

Unless you can't pull the bumper because of rust issues, I can't see any sense in messing around doing this the hard way. It isn't difficult to remove the front bumper, even if you have the a-spec front lip.
