Perhaps the TL is too "Sound Proof"?

Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that I can block out the outside world with ease, but I was driving back from the Manitoba Marathon this morning and I was making a left hand turn at a set of lights... I had the windows/roof closed, I actually didn't have the music turned up for a change (only 6-8 because I had people in the car) and the only other noise was the fan cranked for the AC. I pull the corner, and there is a fire truck right on top of me, didn't hear the sirens or anything as it approached, until it was pretty much on top of me... I asked the other people in my car if they had heard it coming, and no one did... a sign that perhaps you dont want the inside of your care too quiet... some things you need to hear...

I would normally agree with you 100%, but as I had stated, the other two people in my car did not notice either... so either the TL is quiet or the fire truck having one weak ass siren... which given the state of everything else around here is this city, it is entirely possible...

Either that or we were all braindead from the running and heat... either way, scared the crap out of me as I look the my right as I am taking the corner, and there is the grill of a fire engine coming at my car... not pleasant...

Yes, the TL is noisy on the freeway but he wasn't on the freeway at the time. From what I gathered from reading the post is that he was making a left at the light so he wasn't going fast. At the speed the car is very quite.

I had a friend yelling at me at stop light and didn’t even hear him. He had to call me on my cell and ask why I didn’t answer him at the light. I said I didn’t hear him.

Is the TL really that loud(Oh no, thats one of the things I hate about the ford, it sounds like a hurricane on the highway. Fire trucks dont keep their sirens on at a constant, only when they are clearing traffic, chances are they turned it on when you were in their way.

I agree with NoRemorse. Same thing happened to me. I was making a left turn , and I was almost completing the turn when I see out of the corner of eye on the right, a police car with lights and sirens on. I had to slam the brakes so he could continue straight. I couldn't hear a thing... and i'm not deaf.

I find it to be quiet also. At least as far as my other vehicles have been, mostly toyotas.
I was driving on a winding two lane road yesterday, doing about 40-45, had the a/c on speed two, and the radio on a very low volume. I had not used the moonroof as of yet, except to test it out, and I was surprised on the amount of noise I could hear upon opening it up. Other cars passing by the other way, birds singing, trees shuffling in the breeze, and all the other sounds.Plus I could better hear the sweet sound out of the muffler upon accelerating. I closed the moonroof, and my world became silent again. It was very eerie. So all in all, I think its a very quiet automobile.
Thanks

If you think the TL is loud on the highway go take an infiniti out there. I HATED that about my '02 I35 sport, I couldnt have a phone conversation on the highway without hearing the damn wind noise.

aside from rattles, the biggest contributor to interior noise is the tires. Hi performance tires ride noisier than luxo cruiser style tires. Its a trade off you have to live with... especially with low aspect ratio sizes. At speed tires are noiser than when going slow.

If you are willing to trade off performance for silence try, Yokohama AVS db tires.

Besides road noise (which is from my michelin mxm4s), I think the TL is VERY quiet.

What are the best quiet tires that will still keep your car on the road?

I was playing with my navi at a red light, and it turned green, and the lady inbenhind me was honking at me. I didn't hear her, and by the time I started moving, the light was turning yellow again. That's when I wish I had tinted windows so she couldn't see how red my face was.

The TL is very quiet, even on the highway/freeway. It is the quietest car short of a Lexus LS. The road noise is there, but a siren is not road noise. The road noise is transferred from the tires to the suspension to the body of the car as well as echoing beneath the car. Exterior sounds like sirens or friends yelling are silenced quite nicely. Today I was on the highway today in my wife's Mazda Tribute (aka Ford Escape) and had difficulty carrying on a cell phone conversation in either speakerphone or regular mode.

This comment also extends to Nissan. My wife's 2004 Altima SE is twice as loud as the TL on the highway.

I think the TL's engine is a little too quiet

Funny, but was driving home this afternoon and I was thinking the same thing - I can't easily hear the engine revving. I have the 6 speed and I like being able to hear the engine nice and clear for shift points. Only have had the 05 TL for two weeks so still getting use to it. Really liking it.

Terminader,

How'd you get internet in your TL? Are you running a carputer with a VGA screen up front? I've got a carputer going in my 2005 TL for music and am seriously thinking about adding a VGA monitor so I can get NAV, etc. I know at least one person has done this and have been following his install closely, but I'm curious about the experience others have had.

This weekend I installed the Comptech short shifter and the A-spec suspension. When I took off the panel under the steering wheel I was surpised to see little white pilows glued to everything. They were sound deadening stuck on all the panels. I drove the car with the panels removed to make sure the shifter was operating correctly. It was much louder, I was surprised how much differnence removing three panels made!

The only car I've ever driven that is quieter than my TL was a Lexus. Either you guys have aftermarket mods to the exhaust or something similar,or your car is defective. This is one QUIET car dudes. Go drive the competition and see(hear) for yourself.

Thanks! Nice ride. I like this look. How much for just that portion of the A-spec package (spoilers & lip only)?

Do you have the suspension?

I only did the underbody spoilers. They were about $1500 installed by the dealer at time of purchase. I've read other threads on this board that you can get them for about half that price from places like eBay.

I've got DirecTV connected via the PC Card, but I'm looking for a WiFi alternative cause I don't like how the dish looks on the TL. It was kinda cool for awhile, but it doesn't match well. Probably would be better if I had WDP.

Very funny. I am interested in knowing how you handled the video screen install, however.

I would contact the Fire Department and demand that they use louder sirens. Or another option would be to remove all of the windows so you wont have the same situation again.
