So what do you expect, realistically, when you catch someone hitting your car?
Just curious to see some responses.

I'll offer 3 scenarios:

For a little nudge, they made some effort not to hit your car but didnt judge it right. Very little damage done. Just paint scuffs.

For a big hit, large person/large vehicle carelessly swinging the door open and hitting your car.
Obvious dent/scratch

Bumper wreaker.
Obvious grooves in your bumper and missing paint.

Here's the answer to each of your scenarios...keep in mind, you said if I saw them do it...I'll even throw in what happened to Pure Adrenaline, as well (didn't see it, but their car is still there)...

1) Call police, get insurance information, file claim.
2) Call police, get insurance information, file claim.
3) Call police, get insurance information, file claim.

The only way they're getting out of it is if they aren't there when I come out or they run...if they run, I'll still call the cops (not that they care) so they can look for the @$$hole in the area.

After someone "insisted" the ding on the door (of my wife's Volvo) was "no big deal" and got in hios car and left, a while ago, I bought 3 of those disposable camera and put one in each of our car.

Next time something like this happen, or got forbid any other accident, I'd just grab the camera and shoot a bunch of photos with the cars, the other drivers, surroundings, etc.

The cop told me if I had picture(s), they can pursue. Otherwise, for non-injury accident/incident, there is really nothing they can do.

So get your camera today.

1: inspect the damage with them - tell them what it will cost - if they dont fork it then call police

2:inspect, prob call police

3: call police

I park here at work about the farthest from anyone else in the parking lot, along with a guy who owns a newish lincoln LS (to each his own right?). so far, I have not gotten a door ding in my 92 maxima SE or the TL (don't thing just b/c the Maxima is 13 it looks bad, http://members.cox.net/mp3car and check out the maxima pics)

An additional moron example i have.... just the other day I'm sitting at a light minding my own business (thank god i was in my maxima and not my brand new TL). She (not being sexist, just stating facts) is first at the light, it's red... it's on a slight hill, she is driving some old saturn, one with a cheap non-painted bumper... We're in the left turn lane (no arrow)... the light turns green.... does she inch out in the intersection like almost every other smart person?? especially since the cross road is a 4 lane road with median, so if you pulled out partially, you could go in much smaller gaps than if you stay sitting back at the light... anyhow, NO she does not even move AN INCH when it turns green... then it turns yellow, then red.... she still just remains there... then she begins to roll backwards!!! her brake lights were on, so i dont know if she wasnt holding it hard enough, or what... luckily it was only a slight hill and she was rolling very slowly... she gets about 2 feet from my Maxima and I get on the horn... she keeps rolling.... BUMP... she looks back in her rear view mirror... I think she actually thought I hit her!!! I held up my hands like... WTF???? Then I did a hand motion... sorta just saying just forget about it... b/c it was so slow, i knew there would be vitually nothing wrong with my bumper... if that had been my TL, I don't know what I would have done!!!!!

(sorry for the rambling post)

I'm not sure when, how or why this total disregard for damaging someone elses property (automobile) in this case became acceptable...? Why not walk into someones house and kick a hole in the wall and just walking away like it's no big deal?

Here's the solution. I think i got it. Buy a paintless dent removal policy for like 200 bucks and that will get the dents for a couple years. as for paint, uh, still workin on that.

You know what, screw that, obviously people dont care about other peoples shit, so whats the harm in parking a little further away?? Although I do agree that people shouldnt double park, there is nothing wrong with parking somewhere where people arent gonna fuck with your ride! :whocares:

Everytime I go to a store I end up parking far far away from people where no one else may park, but there are morons out there that parks next to my car. I am like " there's hundreds of other spaces and this idiot just had to park next to mine". If it was another TL or some new car fine, But it always ends up being a junky car.

Oh yeah, I refuse to go to Wal-Mart. It's the worse place to park a car. You can never get away from a Wal-Mart cart.

Isn't that the truth......

I must change a previous answer to things that are guaranteed in life....

I now say:

Death, Taxes, and door dings at Wal-Mart....

Our worst one was on a windy day,, wife parked our 6 month old $45K Suburban way the hell out in BFE. It was still struck by a cart going Mach-2. Looked like someone kicked the hell out of the left rear door She told me she was afraid to bring it home, I was afraid to look at it considering her description..
I'm a firm believer in BSM's, but it would have taken a reinforce plywood wall to avoid this "door-ding".

Though caused by a cart vs car, it was still the result of a "moron" leaving the cart in the middle of the parking lot free to be blown away... And from where it had to of come from, it was obviously someone who also parked out in BFE.

Disrespect, disregard, idiots, ignoramus's (ignorant and an A-hole) - people just need to wake-up.

I like stores like IKEA that don't allow carts pass the front entrances. You have to bring your car up and load your car in the loading areas. Never have to worry about carts running loose. I think Aldi make you bring back your cart so you can get your quarter back. It may be annoying but in the end it's a good thing.

People are too lazy to bring there cart back to the proper spot, what is the world comming to?

It’s been a year now and no door dings. Recently I had to park in hotel parking garage and was worried until I got to the 5th floor. There must have been a Porsche Club of America convention at the hotel. The level was filled with new and used Porsches. The TL was parked in the first available slot and it was one of the few times I didn’t worry about door dings.

Thumbs down

Today I understood TL drivers who had some dents, bumpers scratches.
I came out today morning to find out that my Abyss TL had been hit and bumper gets a lot of long scratches. (some MORON tried to park behind me and scratched rear bumper in several places. No notes, no phones and etc. He/She is fucking MORON )
I am mad, but I will try to fix.
Questions:
1. Do I really have to repaint whole bumper (rear) or just that portion that was scratched?
Please advice.

If you want it to look good, you will have repaint the whole bumber, depends on how anal you are about it. When my 2002 TLS got hit a few years ago I did the whole bumber, it cost me about $500, but I couldnt take the scratches. So far I have been lucky with my 2005, knock on wood. Sorry to hear that some idiot did that to your baby, thats why I park so damn far away from everyone.

Make sure you get some quotes from a few body shops, that was you will be able to get the best deal. you can also get the best offer by telling one shop what the other shop is offering, it takes some time, but if you can, you could get the best deal that way.

This shit happened to myTL. I got a damn nasty ding in the upper part (above door handle) of my rear passenger door. I can only conclude it was an SUV, pickup or minivan to make a ding that high up.

It's a nasty ding because not only is the metal bent but the paint is scratch to the point he primer under it is showing.

#$&* shopping centers. Even when I park (way out there), some moron just has to park next to my car and ding it.

Do you have any bumper protection on TL?

Sounds like what almost happened to me this weekend...

Leaving the grocery store on Saturday, I'm sitting at the end of one of the aisle's of the parking lot waiting for some slow poke to go by so I can pull into the main aisle and exit the parking lot. Since this idiot is taking all day to drive by, I start looking around. As I look right, I notice the back up lights are on on a car in a parking spot beside where I'm sitting. Then I watch as the car starts rolling back! I'm thinking "Surely this moron sees my car behind them" since if they looked in their driver side mirror, their rear view mirror, or out the back window they'd see my car. Well, guess not as the car continues rolling...upon laying on my horn, the car abruptly stops. As this was going on, another car had pulled up behind me...they would've backed into two cars at the same time! These are the kind of people that ding your doors, hit your car and leave, can't seem to drive properly when on the road, etc. If only there was a way to revoke licenses and tow cars on the spot of morons like this...
