Parchment leather surface wear

I was washing car and cleaning the interior and noticed the the lumbar support on the driver seat was "dirty"(brownish red )... I got out the leather cleaner and attempted to clean it off... It wouldn't come off. So I got down to take a close look at it. It wasn't dirt, it was the surface of the color wearing off. You could see the grain of the leather. This my first car with leather seats, but I can't imagine that this normal for 6 months of use.

Has anyone else seen this? I did a search on leather issues but about all I got was butt print issues.

Does it look anything like this?

Your dealer will replace it for you.

not quite... No flaking. it looks like the surface was lightly sanded. Sanded makes its seem like it is rough, it is actually very smooth, its just that you can now see the brown/red leather through it. I would post a picture, never done it . the other seats do not show this wear. But they don't have the lumbar support. which I do use.

It appears that the leather tanning process was substandard or maybe it was cleaned with harsh cleaner products?? Make sure the leather cleaner or conditioner is ph balanced. Definitely need to discuss replacement with the dealer.

It doesn't appear to be a serious leather problem. This is what I would do:

Get a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Wet the sponge. Put some determent on it (like Lexol Cleaner or Woolite). Then, gently rub it on the leather a couple of times. If this is stain related, it will all come off. Then, put some leather cleaner.

Good luck!

My wife had a sample magic eraser, I tried it on a small spot... no luck. Using a magnifing glass to look closer, the leather appears to be "painted". The surface layer has been worn off. I'm not sure how they color leather. whatever the method, it doesn't seem to be very durable in this case.

Has Acura come up with a permanent fix? I've heard of folks getting upgraded (2005 TL) panel replacements, but still suffering from the butt print issue. Also, it appears once the dealer fixes this once they won't do it again (under warranty).

Sorry to hear that. You will have to have your dealer replace the entire seat cover. The surface of the seat cover is not leather-it is coated with rubber/vinyl.

I'm calling first thing Moday. I really hope that this is not a ongoing problem. I wonder if anyone in the engineering dept responsible for seats actually did any wear testing on this material. Do all of interior materials get the same treatment? (black camel...) or is just the parchment? Maybe it doesn't show up on a dark leather...

As for a onetime only replacement of seat material... I have done battle with Ford, Chrysler, and Subaru, on a variety of issues. It all depends on how annoying/persistant you want to be.
