Paint Job

first of all, acurazine is the shit. extremely helpful...

so i have a 05 tl, picked it up about 2-3 months ago. The owner took care of the car but it's about that time for a paint job, at least for what i want the car to look like? any suggestions on a good and affordable place to get the entire car painted?

If you want cheap craigslist, or maaco.

You get what you pay for on a paint job.

Search around your area for a reputable and reliable body shop.

I believe a better than OEM paint job should be somewhere between 6-8k.

Come to San Antonio.

$1000 not including Jambs with Lifetime warranty.

A+ with 10+ reports on Angies and top rating on most review sites.

I'm going to bring mine soon there.

3 step clear and base all Dupont

Don't ask me why it is so cheap, but from the reviews this place is legit.

This. Maaco is cheap because they cut a lot of corners.

If you want quality, I would advise searching around for a good body shop. Then I would talk to the paint guy and say "hey I want a quality job, so feel free to take your time ect". A lot of those paint guys are put under a lot of pressure to get the car painted as fast and cheap as possible, not as good as possible.

People need to stop saying Maaco is bad. The reason why you here horror stories because people are ignorant and don't know what they're buying. For example, there 'presidential' package ONLY includes PAINT. NO CLEAR NO BASE COAT. If you purchase there full package it is $2k+ and most people never have a problem with that package.

Just cause they can dupe you doesn't mean they suck.

That seems comparable to my local prices. I got a quote for the front clip of my car for $550. (front bumper, hood, front fenders, a-pillars, mirrors)

I never said they were bad. I just said they cut corners. Maaco's claim to fame (or perhaps infamy?) is their super cheap paint jobs that are made super cheap by cutting lots of corners.

You're right that you can get a quality paint job from them, but it ends up costing about the same as it would from a body shop.

Personally I would rather trust my car to a reputable body shop guy who's job it is to replicate/match factory finishes, rather than a guy at Maaco who mostly does "presidential specials", with the occasional quality job.

Just sayin'...

In regards to Maaco, the street advice is to slip the guy some $ to do a better job.
However that is at your own risk.

Man I would get my car painted in san Antonio at that price for a quality job.
Seems too good to be true. Most quality shops I know will hit you $500 for a panel.

Where in San Antonio is this at? I just moved here a few weeks ago and thinking of possibly getting it re-painted.

The only time it should be 'about time for a paint job' is if the paint is falling apart, cracking, and/or baked with sun damage. Why not just find yourself a quality detailer? A top notch job would probably run anywhere from $200-600 and it would do a damn better job than a cheap/rubbish paint job. They would get your paint looking FRESH if done right.

But then again,

Expect to pay 6k for an excellent paint job. I had mine done here in Orlando and most of the money was alllll prep work. Disassembling the entire car, sanding everything down, paint, wet sand, and assemble it again. It takes time and paint is something you dont want to cheap out on. Im 100% happy with the outcome of my car. Its better then the factory paint considering I dont have a hint of orange peel and my bumpers match!

Just to clarify I had my entire repainted due to someone walking around it with a key.

Exactly. In a full shop with tons of overhead and a full teardown that is correct. Let's face it though. People in this economy are generally willing to pay for a full tear down. I would usually charge about 3 grand for that which is consistent with my 50% of most body shop quotes. $1500 is going to cover minor ding/scratch repairs full wet sand and blocking and base coat clear coat paint. Anything additional will incur aditional charges. IE. major bodywork, color change, panel replacement....

I paint cars as a hobby and wouldn't ever send any car I own to maaco. If you are going to have something painted have it done right the first time or you will regret your decision. Just my 2 cents.

Maaco does use some very cheap materials. Those guys can shoot a slick job though. It's alike an assembly line over there. Their painters get plenty of practice. As long as you pay for the extra prep you are fine. I, myself, would provide my own materials too.

Yea Maaco is fine for my $1000 beater but if you expect better than factory finish you'll be sadly disappointed.
