Is opportunity knocking?...
Had an '05 6MT few years back but was forced to sell.
I have an opportunity to purchase an '05 base TL with automatic transmission...
The car is a 1 Owner and w/272k miles. Maintenance records are available with purchase and has been up to date on things.
Minor bumps/bruises to include driver fender damage, rear bumper crack on passenger side near exhaust tip.
As for interior, driver seat is fine, front passenger seat is torn to shiet, and rear bottom cushion is all cracked up.
Overall, physical appearance is decent to me. Tires have decent tread.
All other electronics on and in the car are in proper working order.
No stink/smokey/piss smells front the interior.
OEM replacement parts such as driver fender and rear bumper (color matched) and will come with the car. Replacements were for another '05 TL that was damaged.
Engine sounds great and no leakage of oil/etc.
The killer: Transmission is slipping. Per the Owner, "transmission is shot".
He is fine with selling the car but he is unsure as to what he wants for it.
No longer wants the car due to the transmission issue.
My inclination is to purchase (of course on an agreeable price-unsure what I will start offer at and top off at).
If purchased, thoughts are to do the following to see if trans is alleviated:
Drain trans fluid.
Replace pressure switches.
Replace screen/filter.
New OEM Honda trans fluid.
Hoping to get some insight for you fellow Ziners on your thoughts regarding purchasing, repairing, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Honestly you have to weigh the pros and cons from this. And in the end if you get the vehicle for a decent price and after you do those things listed and they don't work and you have to end up rebuilding/replacing the transmission is it worth the cost it's going to take to replace it if it does need to. There is risk and major reward in your decision.

I would pass on that vehicle.. 272k miles is way too high. Pass on it and keep looking around. Depending on your budget, that will dictate the quality of vehicles you're going to be able to purchase. That's just my 2 cents. I wouldn't put anymore money into that vehicle to fix it. Don't rush into getting back into a TL if the price/car isn't up to standards. Most of the members here will agree that the vehicle you described to us is a car to stay away from.

Excuse my langauge, but WTF? hahah you want to purchase a 10 year old TL with almost 300,000 miles with a bad transmission?!?!?
Thats basically like saying, "I want to make the worst possible decision I can, and buy the worst possible TL I can find". Unless you are buying it as a parts car or because you want it as a rolling chassis to build something crazy, then I say absolutely not!

Just make sure to put regular fuel in if you want to hear knocking.
