Opinion needed: Clear/Matte or Type S tails

I am looking to change up the appearance of my car just a little bit. I figure some new tails would set it off nicely. The base red tails currently have light tints on them and the sidemarkers are sprayed to match. What do you guys think I should go with? The Clear/Matte tails currently for sale in the USR group buy or type s tails? Below are pics of my car and also a pic for each choice. I really like the clear/matte tails(check out roackstar's ride) but I am just not sure how they will look on the AM color. All comments and opinions are welcome

Haha @ bullet holes. They are actually hiding a few dents that I bought the car with. I am going to remove the dents in a few weeks so the bullet holes will eventually go. Thanks for the opinion

I like those but I can't justify the cost of paying to get them done vs getting a new set at a much lower price without wondering if they are sealed properly

I share the same sentiments. I think they are perfect on SSM/ASM or NBP.

I think the clear ones just invite police attention. They are very obviously not OEM, and gives them a reason to pull you over. Plus, I'd be afraid if I got rearended the person would have a perfect excuse, if my car had modified/cleared/non-OEM tail lights.

So you see my new tail Justin . I paid 150 for the labor to do my tail . I think I should do like the third pic ,tint a little bit but I'm still happy . Yes, it's cost more than a new pair BUT it's unique and you will never be like any other TL ,trust me. If it's fine with you try a DIY . AckTL did a really great job, he sealed more than one layer I believe because as I see it's really thick.

Do you have an extra set that you were using when you sent them to Ack or you had parked the car the entire time? Nice tails

I want these on my CGP...Ack told me for these you need Base 07-08 tails and typeS tails to put these together. So they are really pricey, but very sick:

^^^Damn that's sexy...I've already got Type-S tails and would like to know where I can get more details. I gotta search around but am dead tired. I think someone on Azine provided this service.

Would be great to see a pic with those on ASM/SSM.

If you want the choice I vote TYPE-S. Two reasons:

1-All clear will pull cop attention as there needs to be a red reflector (most states if not all) and would be illegal.
2- that picture you posted and the on on the USR website is mine.. Its with a gloss black bezel and the real one is flat black that you will receive.

I will have these two members post here, but don't be so sure that non custom sets don't leak. One of the members is my friend and he bought the Clear/matte and they leaked a river and the supplier told him to throw it in the oven for 5-7 minutes which would melt the entire insides. His car is actually Anthracite too so its your choice but I will let you see what it really looks like as the picture above is a glossy bezel and a custom set, not the DEPO one offered. I have also read other various stories here on azine about how their sets leaking and one was recent that ACURA couldn't fix the problem and his tails were OEM.

Yessir.

Its either 07-08 base with needing the TYPE-S bezel or the TYPE-S tail lights with needing the base clear brake diffuser. Either way you need both sets.

Got my USR clear tail lights and they work just fine.

No leaks whatsoever.

I've also never had a problem with them. That's including getting pulled over at least 10 times for either my front license plate or speeding

Is it possible to for you to get of his car with the USR lights? So to get those custom lights above, I'd need to purchase two sets of tails to get that combo. Sounds like more than I am willing to spend

Yeah ok,,, lets discuss,,, I bought brand new in box DEPO taillights back a few months ago, had zero issue for first two months, first time i used a high pressure car wash my passenger side started to leak like a bastard, fogging up condensing water pellets all over and nice amount of water sitting on the bottom. I spent this weekend removing bumper and both sets of lights to try to fix them myself because the EBAY seller NEONDIALS who sold me these DEPO's gave me some 4 hour DIY fix for the leak that would surely destroy the light and/or at least make them absolutely unreturnable.

So I decided to take off bumper and both taillights clean out with distilled water the leaking one and dry with a hair dryer and then seal with clear caulking both sets of lights because ALL of these lights have huge weak spots for leaking. ,... so lets review my weekend, (and neondials, get fukt) photo's coming

BTW woke up this morning to check status of factory DEPO's and there must have still been moisture in the housing so i have some slight fogging,, really excited about it since I wrapped up the entire car last night, resecured bumper ect. ect. probably will pull back cover and let a fan hit the back of housing overnight indoors, that should,,... in theory get any remaining moisture out. ,, and again if any aftermarket EBAY seller gives you a DIY for a taillight fix that involves sticking the light housing in the oven, DO NOT DO THIS, this is how these companies get out of warranty's, direct there customers to do something that may work correctly in 1/10 situations, all ovens are different, they all come to temp differently they all have different thermostats and all that other good stuff so DO NOT put your light in an oven unless you know what your doing.

did i tell neondials to get fukt ? i wasn't sure lol,,,

I'm sorry you had to go through all of that. I was reading that these came with a 1 yr warranty, is the seller not honoring the warranty? How is the fitment by the way?

fitment was fine, and warranty was in place, but for the labor of putting the lights in, and removing them and then shipping them back,,,, i think that time and money far exceeded the 200$ or 179$ i paid for them. It's great that they have a one year warranty except the install/uninstall and the reshipment, plus lets not forget the pain and suffering, it wasn't worth it to even deal with seller, i tried to get seller to give me a 20% off a 500$ set of DEPO fronts,,, maybe type s front headlights, or maybe dual projector,, not sure, but he was a dik about it, so i messed with him a little and rolled out the tools,,, its ok though,, because " THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THOSE OF US STILL WILLING TO GET OUR HANDS DIRTY" fml,, so salty that i still have that fogging hopefully it will clear itself up,, prob not though,, fml,

if the foggy light looks a little misaligned, its because my friend took my car out while i was passed out drunk two summers ago and first thing his drunk ass did was bust out the rear taillight,, but didn't get a leak until 3 months into the depo's being in,,, you get what you pay for,,, for instance,,, i passed out and left my keys out,, and i paid for it with body work ,,,

shulmanater, did you install them correctly? I'm guessing neon is a affiliate of USR? Possibly? You should message USR off Acurazine and see whatsup, I'm sure he'll help you. Did you make sure to properly place the washer and/or replace it.

I've not had a problem so far. TLdude, I'm not sure about Texas law regarding them, but I've been pulled over by State Troopers for my front license plate in daylight and they never said anything about my tail lights. You can find my picture of the tails installed somewhere, lost the thread

I'd be more afraid of getting screwed in a rearend accident. I know if I rearended someone who had cleared out non-stock taillights, I would 100% try to use that to my advantage.

I looked at them and they were installed correctly, we also changed the gaskets and used sealer where I do to protect the rear (since its open) and it still leaked. I also saw the email and I am not attacking a particular person or seller. I have seen OEM tail lights leak, read the recent thread.

Clear tails are illegal because there are no red reflectors which would possibly give you the advantage if your arguments are on point.

Not really because there is no law against "smoked" tails. As long as you can see the brake lights and there is a red reflector in there its perfectly legal. If its smoked to where you can't see anything, then yes it may work.

Champ, I have been pulled over and not bothered for my illegal tints, but that doesn't mean its not illegal. All it takes is one cop to bother you and its a ticket. There is a thread in the NJ section by someone got a ticket for having 6k bulbs which almost everyone changes and I have heard stories about people getting tickets for V1 switchbacks.. You can't justify that its OK because you've been pulled over and not bothered. Im not being a dick, but just saying how it is.

Hey Ack, how much would it cost for tails like the ones posted a few posts above? Do you have a trade in program? You can pm me details.

I would have guessed that any alteration to the factory lights would be illegal, but now I think I'm wrong about that.

I don't know why they wouldn't just make the law that way, since the manufacturers already have to get DOT approval. I don't know why there would be any reason to allow for modification to the OEM tail light.

But it looks like the law just specifies the color that is allowed to be emitted, etc.
