Oil Change WArning

Hi everyone.

My mid shows that "<20%" oil life. i just wanted to know, will it give me a warning that it's time to change the oil, or am i supposed to just wait til it reaches 0? Also, im at 4000 miles right now, does it sound about right that my oil change will come soon? How many miles were your cars when you first had an oil change?

Thanks!

I didnt really wait for mine to say anything. I changed mine at 3K. I would go ahead and do it if I were you..

When you do it, this is how you reset the MID.

All early warning oil messages are in 10% increments until you get to 15%. When you get to 15% the message will be "Service Engine Soon" and will show up in the MID display every time you start the car and will remain on the display. The next message at 10% (I think) is "Service Engine Now". The final message at 0% (I think) is "Service Past Due". To make each of these messages go away (until you restart the car again) you simply hit the > side of the MID button.

The MID will show an envelope graphic with a "Service Needed Soon" message automatically after you hit <15%. It will keep popping up until the MID is re-set or become a permanent Service Overdue [or some similar] message if you fall to 0%.
4000 sounds a just little low/fast to have oil life at 20%, but not enough to worry.

i did the same thing as trancemisson-- changed out oil and filter early at 4000 miles when my MID said oil life was at 40%.

It will only show the envelope graphic if there are other services to be done beside the oil change, and at 4,000 miles it is unlikely there are other services due at this time so only the oil life percentage and reminder will be shown.

i change my oil when it is at 15 % or at 5500 miles, which ever comes first. my philoshpy is that spending 20 dollars for a oil change is better than spending time, drifficulty and effort in getting it fixed. (my ex-friend never changed his oil in his ford ranger and now its diying, 30000 mile oilchange....)

thanks everyone for the input! i will decide to change my oil when it reaches 10%. I think that sounds about right.

Will Y., so you think that's a little low for my to get an oilchange so quick? What is the average for it?

My thought, that your mileage is a little low for 1st service, was based on my TL and seeing similar posts in various threads. My impression is that 20% oil life comes up generally in the 5000 - 6000 mile range, but haven't taken a survey. See also ding069's post above, for example. [There's probably a thread on everyone's oil life somewhere, too...]

However, your TL's oil life isn't very far off what I've seen anyway-- just a little reduced, and it's probably the TL's MID and ECU taking your driving conditions into account.

So I have around 13000 miles now and the Service B light popped up. I already did the initial oil change @ the dealership and had them use Mobil Synthetic. Now, my question is does anybody know if the maintenance reminder takes into account the use of Synthetic oil? or am I seeing a premature maintenance reminder here? Had the tires recently rotated and balanced, alignment is fine. I could probably use a new windshield wiper insert...may try a piaa insert there. Aside from this, I cant think of much else that needs to be done...What else is in service b1? air filter?

I changed mine at just around 4,000 miles so it sounds like you're in the same boat. I would schedule your oil change once the service message comes up.
