oil change intervals
oil change intervals
3rd Gen Owners....
According to the manual, it says that I should wait until the MIL light turns ON for me to go get my oil change or as some people refer to A1 service.
As of today, I have 3200 miles and I am at 50% oil life.
I have always been a firm believer of changing the oil at every 3000 to 3500 miles. Should I wail till the MIL light comes on? Does it hurt if I change the oil more frequently?
I dont mind spending the extra $$$ for a few more oil changes.
I read posts where people are at 6000 or 7000 miles before the MIL light turns on.
Do most of you wait?
thanks in advance.

Not a waste of money necessarily.. a waste of resources. It won't hurt to run the car 6-7k miles before a change.
Both my Accords (a four and a V6) get oil changes every 7-7.5k miles (like the manual says) and the engines (89.8k on the four, 27k on the V6) don't burn or use oil and it's still pretty clean at the changes.

I'm a second gen. owner, but it doesn't matter. I would probably get the 1st oil change at your current mileage (switching to synthetic), then getting the changes done at less frequent intervals (say between 6K-7.5K miles). Also, always get the filter changed with the oil change. Anything more often is wasting money and adds to the waste oil in the world. Newer car engines are built to tighter tolerances (therefore, the typical recommended 5W-30 grade), and don't burn oil as readily. I do recommend a good quality synthetic (I use Mobil 1) as the oil doesn't 'coke' on hot engine parts like petroleum based oils can (this is more important for turbo engines that tend to run hotter). Just my opinion.
For your first OIL CHANGE, let your MID do the trick. It'll tell you that you need an oil change at about 5800 or 6200 milies. After that, change it at every 3000miles, or switch it to MOBIL 1. I have switched to Mobil 1 since then and changing it at every 5k

Do a search Road Rage talks about oil and oil changes. Honda/Acura puts special break in aditives in their initial oil fill up. This is why you are supposed to wait and change your oil untill the MID tells you to. Now with the first oil change I probably would not go much over the 5500 mile range but thats me. I have been using the lubrication engineers 8130 10w30. This stuff comes out looking brand new after 6000 miles. Good Stuff. Little pricey but well worth it to me. Hope this helps.
Yea, the manual has the info you need about when to get your TL serviced. Follow the MID and you shouldn't have any problems. As rescueswimmer said, do a search for RR journals and you'll be surprised at the info/knowledge folks on this forum have. Do a search on Oil Change and A1 Service.
I have an 04TL. The first oil change I did was at 5750 miles. I still had 30% oil life. Now I change every 5000 miles with Valvoline Synthetic 5W/20. There is special break-in oil in the car when delivered , so you do not want to change that out too quickly. I do check my oil and have never had to add any between oil changes. Current mileage is 12000. The car is great!
