-start car
-let vehicle reach operating temperature
-then drain the oil
-when oil change is done let car run
-turn car off
-let it sit several minutes
-then check oil

I don't know about you but when im done I let car run 10 seconds turn it off, then check the level

seems to be normal oil changing procedures....

the reason why they allow it to sit is because their procedure is very consistent and proves to be accurate.

while nothing is wrong with your quick changes, its not all that consistent and accurate.

because Science.

you are right

but I think if it is fully drained and 4.5 is put in exact then all should be ok anyways

yes, should be fine.
but if you were in a corporate setting, there are checks and balances/accountability that need to be done, so no one forgets something, like forgets to fill with oil.

its all about covering your behind.

i forgot to put the oil cap back once on a different car.

i lost the cap while test driving it.

IHC came up with a way that wont let you forget about the cap...
place the cap in the hood latch, that way if you close the hood, it wont allow you to lock it....and it'll be a reminder to put the cap back in place.

I've personally seen a mechanic fill oil without putting the drain bolt back through the customer waiting area windows. It went through with a slight delay... guy looked confused as heck when he started hearing the splashing under the car. I'm glad I was just waiting for parts and not service on my car.

Sounds like an easy way to break my oil cap too.

I guess i should stop slamming my hood down after oil changes

We had the local lexus dealer change my wife's IS oil the first time because it was free. The tech only hand tightened the drain plug so all the oil leaked out. My wife, much like most other females I know, didn't notice the oil light on her dash was lit up. I found out when I left an hour or so after her that there was a few quarts of oil on my garage floor. I called her and had her go start the car and tell me what she sees. She drives 30 miles each way for work.....Lexus bought the car back from us and gave us a new one. lol.

Whoa, that's "lucky". Crazy how the simplest job can turn in a nightmare sometimes though.
