Nubbie question: What is the purpose of this transparent piece of plastic near the rear wheel? Thanks!

looks like a 3M-type of covering to prevent rock chips in the paint...

Thanks for the reply. I wish Honda had covered the entire side skirts with the plastic. My kids are always getting the side skirts dirty with their sneakers when getting in/out of my car.
