Noticed something odd

So in 06 manual if i step on the gas hard in mostly 3rd/4th gear it sets off my radar detector. If i step on 08 automatic hard it does the exact some thing. both radar detectors are the same model and not expensive ones (50 bucks) but i still find it very strange. it actually scared me first couple of time because i thought i was busted but realized its the car setting it off.

Because you have crap detector. A $50 detector won't do anything except cause us guys who run real radars to slam on our brakes because of the constant false signal those crap detectors leak.

To fix your problem I made a DIY for you.

Step 1: Remove radar from windshield, unplug the power cable. (Place detector on passenger seat)

Step 2: Start car and find a road that is empty and flat.

Step 3: Reach speeds up to 60 mph and throw radar out the window.

Step 4 (Optional): Make a u turn and run over radar detector.

Step 5: No more problems

A cheap radar detector only detects when you are about to be pulled over.

lol so one tracked minded around here sometimes.. my post really has nothing to do with radar detector its more the fact that acura's set off my detector. the actual point was.... what does the car spit out that triggers it? i have used the same detector in dodge ford Hyundai Toyota and only the acura set it off..

im not real sure about 88 mph that's very likely the speed im at when it kicks on

The only 4 bands you need to detect is LASER, KA, K, and X. What are these other "5" bands you speak of? Cobra is considered cheap off-brand detectors in my eyes.

88mph is a reference to an awesome movie. He wasn't serious when he was asking you that...

Tried Nissan? Friend has a cheap $50 detector and his moms 02 maxima sets it off everytime he floors it in that car.

Get a real detector. V1 or passport/escort

I don't know it just says 9 band on it
mine said 12 but only detects 4, that's what the manuel shows also. I don't know
Cheap off in your eyes but just saying it worked on highway pretty well.
I wasn't waiting that much

We only have what you go off of.

you posted a pretty incomplete post.
no facts.
Just a "i guess it goes off at around this speed"
yeah, that doesnt really sound scientific there, buddy.

if you want better answers; you need a better thought provoking Original Post.

Ok, yes I meant a great movie @ the 88 MPH comment. That being said however, how is your Radar detecter hooked up? Cig lighter? Hard wired?

It may take a friend/passenger, but I'd hook up a voltimeter at the place where the radar is plugged in, then repeat what has been causing it and look for anomalies via the Voltimeter.

Voltimeter's can be had at HF on the cheap, or Amazon for ~20 for a decent one.

Here's the one I used:

Amazon Amazon

I have the Escort 8500 and at times the windshield wipers (usually during the "momentary wash" cycle) will set off the laser sensor. On the rare occasions that it happens, it's at highway speeds with the cruise control on when I activate the windshield wiper "wash" switch.

Do a search, there are other threads about this happening. It's not just so called "cheap" detectors that it's happening to.

I think this one is very easy to explain. Light + water = probably sets off your laser detection. It is very common issue at dusk or dawn when sun hits windshield. I am sure water will break light to hit the G spot.

my escort 8500 would sometimes go off when I put the car in reverse. Not sure but I suspect something power related.

cinobyte, I'd suggest finding a friend with a Valentine V1 or Escort Passport 9500 iX and see if it sets off those detectors. If yes, it's the car. If no, follow Orange's instructions above and get a different detector. (And then test that new one as well....)

You need to replace the flux capacitor and it will work again.

My V1 will do this on occasion with the laser. I noticed with my 8500 plugged in (and the display set on voltage) that when the V1 goes off for accelerating the voltage fluctuates quickly, which i think the little spike may be causing it.

I would like to know what sets it off. Try blocking the area where it picks up the signal first. Move it to a different location if its not hard wired. Passenger seat would work fine.

I've seen many cars have a very brief voltage drop at full throttle; sometimes the belt briefly slipping when it downshifts. Make sure it's not gforce related, will it do the same if you punch it in second gear and kick down to first? If its only in 3rd I'm wondering if the car does actually emit something. Maybe it's an SOS from the 5at.... Nevermind, just re-read that it does the same in the manual. I can't imagine anything that happens with the car to make it do that.

The best thing I can say is try to pinpoint a speed or rpm that makes this happen.

My radar detector has been in the trunk since I drove through Virginia last year.
