At 160 miles currently with my TL, I got this car at around 150 miles on her and I'm basically blind to how she would perform at let's say 40,000 miles. This is also my first time owning a high mileage car and it's she's been pretty reliable. However, I'm not sure how a younger TL would perform cause right now whenever I floor my gas pedal, (while rolling), there seems to be like a lag, before she pulls. And even when she pulls, it doesn't seem like it's all that powerful. Maybe I'm just over-estimating the power but it seems as if it's trying to pull a 3600 lbs car and not that effective doing it. I'm also getting this rotten egg smell after pulling hard, (only happens when I floor the car), is this normal?

Is this perhaps a result of an high mileage engine and tranny that's under performing? Or am I just over estimating the power of this car?

I've done a few oil changes, and tranny fluid changes and also tightened the throttle cable. I've also used plenty of bottles of high mileage fuel injector cleaners and air filter and etc.

Any thoughts?

 

My first thought is surely you mean 160,000 miles, as 160 miles would be an impossibly low number for a 3gen TL

Rotten egg smell is the catalytic converter(s), could be one or all are going bad. When the precats went out on my '02 Maxima, it was gradual enough I didn't notice the decline in performance until I was barely able to beat a V6 Grand Am. Found a used low mileage pair, 45-85 roll-on acceleration improved by 3 full seconds.

 

lag...check under hood for turbo, might be turbo lag...

seriously...use google and make sure you have acurazine in the search, all of the relevant threads will show up...

I'll admit, I researched that it's a torque converter lag when you WOT on autos. Did I answer my own question then?

 

The elentra lower your hp/tq after that upset. Race a sonata to raise it back up.

lately everyone thats been posting symptoms of their transmission crapping out is exactly what I went through. Although I dont have that rotten egg smell.

Sounds like transmission + Cat problems.

You should try a 1x3 with Redline D4.
It didnt fix my problem but it temporarily gave the trans some life.

 

My guess is he put his car into some sort of 2nd gear and floored it....

 

I would say no, but I don't know how a transmission would make a big enough sound to whine.

Also the rotten egg smell from people who has this in the forum seems to be a cause of sulfur in gasoline or older car.

 

egg smell is from the cat converter, definitely! It's probably on the way out.

I spoke to my mechanic, he said my cat is probably on its way out.
He said to wait until it throws a code then fix it.

On a serious note, have you ever search rotten egg smell from exhaust? Like one member stated, it could be you cat is going bad. That is usually a sign so stop flooring it.

IMO, you don't need to be using cleaners unless it wasn't maintain properly.

 

Maybe your air filter has never been changed. Or spark plugs.

 

All your questions (minus the dipstick issue and the highway loss) has been addressed on multiple occasions. Search is indeed your friend. Take the time to keep searching and reading up. Some information for you.

The catalytic converters normally under heavy acceleration have a "burning / rotten eggs" smell. However, these vehicles aren't new anymore, so the possibility of a bad cat. is spot on. If you've searched, this topic is beaten to death and has been discussed since the 3rd gen TL was made.

You could have several things going on with the acceleration not being instant.

You could have a bad APP sensor
You could have a transmission on it's way out
You could have a cat(s) on the way out

Best thing to do is have the entire system scanned for pending codes. This includes the transmission part also. Usually anyone that gets a hold of the HDS (Honda scan tool) can do all this. Most private shops don't invest that type of money to have a scanner that can scan every vehicle that comes through the door. It's not impossible either, so look around. The shop will take a temp reading for the cats to see if any of them are clogged. The temp would be drastically higher than the rest.

BTW, what you tightened, was the cruise control cable going to the APP sensor. The throttle body is drive-by wire. There are no cable on the actual TB to tighten. Never mess with the cruise control cable. If you'd search and or even looked at the owners manual, it would have said what that was.

Stop messing with your TL, start researching, start with bringing the TL to a certified shop and or dealer. Don't ask questions here just to back step and ask your mechanic and say "well my mechanic said.." when others here said the same.

Your cat could be getting clogged giving you the issue you are experiencing with acceleration.

itss at the strut bar right under on the left side of the car (passenger side). Lift the hood and remove the covers at the top and there should be the bracket that covers the APP sensor and you'll have to remove those brackets in order to get to the wire

 

i've done spark plugs 3 months ago and air filter about 5 months ago.
