Normal????

Hi guys,

Ok so I have noticed something weird happen to my car 3 times now. My car is only 1 week old and I am noticing a strange sound already I don't know if it's normal because I have never owned a "new" car before, but I am guessing it shouldn't be doing that.. Anyway.... I have noticed a couple of times when I back up (example.. drive way) that when I put it in drive and go to take off I hear like a scraping sound coming from under the front (engine I am guessing). It is just a quick scrape sound kind of like plastic scraping against something. Anyone heard this before??? Any idea what it could be?? It's freaking me out! I hope something isn't wrong with my new car

It would be the tranny, and I too hear a noise. It is normal on all cars to an extent, some are just louder than others.

I am assuming you have an auto.

That doesn’t sound right but who knows. My motto is, if your car is new and something just doesn’t seem right take it in and get it checked out. You should feel 100% comfortable with a new car. Good Luck

Yes, my car is automatic. Ok so a tranny is supposed to make that noise? I never noticed it on my used cars so that is why I didnt know if it was normal or not for a new engine.

I probably will end up taking it in, but I just KNOW that when I do they won't hear it. You know how it is when something is going wrong and you take it in and they don't see or hear anything!

It is the ABS/VSA self check (usually at 8MPH I think)..........is perfectly normal.

What exactly does the ABS/VSA self check do, that would cause this scraping noise?

I posted similar problem in problems&fixed section. I am taking my DV camcorder to my car and record then I will post it here for better description. that's if my car duplicates the same problem right now. Otherwise it will have to be tomorrow morning when car is all cold.

TLgirl4 - JPSman is right... it's just the ABS self-check and it happens everytime you start your car and drive away. It doesn't sound like a scraping noise though, more like a buzzing pump sound that lasts for 2 seconds and usually happens twice before going away.

Yeah that sounds like the ABS check . Some people will get another click on the 6MT when they start moving in any gear which is actually your brake pads moving slightly. When I did my pads i noticed that when they get worn on the brembos, they get a little play. When I changed my pads the noise disappeared.

It might also be scrapping the front under body wind deflector on the pavement. If your driveway is inclined like mine. I scrape it everyday. Look under the front of the car to see if it has scrapped.

Thanks all!!

Champcar-got it, thanks.

Jogan- That isn't the problem. #1 I pull out very slow and carefully. #2 The noise has also happened when parking on the street and pulling away, no incline at all.

I have to pick up my plates next week at the dealership, so I will tell them about it then. Hopefully it will make the noise for them.
