What happened to me was I slammed the trunk with my key inside the trunk and couldnt find spare. I called my closest dealer and had a friend drop me off. You need to bring proof that the car is yours like bill of sale and they can make you a key using your vin. My car is a 2007 tls but its worth a shot. Btw it will not start your car but can unlock it. The key will have to be programmed.

Getting the dealer to make you a key is the easiest and least messy way of dealing with it. The quickest way of doing it is to break a window, but it is the messiest, and believe me, you will be finding glass in the carpet for as long as you own the car. I'm not sure what a side window costs, but it can't be much more expensive than getting the dealer to cut you a key and then having it programmed to start your car.

Yeah, I'd call a dealer. They will be able to help you out. You might have to wait until monday but its better than smashing a window or trying to use a slim jim or something.

I had my friend pick up my key and they needed my VIN so my friend just called me for my VIN and they cut it and later that day he dropped the key off to me.
Did they ask my friend for any proof? No.
They just needed my VIN which I provided my friend through the phone at Acura and they just cut it. No bullshit.
I'm rather surprised they didn't ask for any proof to my friend but I like the trust we have up here.

Just go to dealer and give them your VIN.

options:
1. a professional with a slim jim can open it no problems without damaging anything. but they usually charge quite a bit even though it only takes them 2 minutes.
2. dealer can make a spare key, shouldnt be too expensive for the key itself(you dont need the keyfob)
3. break the side window on rear, its cheap. if you can do the labor yourself then this is the cheapest method. When my car got broken into my rear window only cost $65 picked up, and I did the labor myself.

My car was definitely stolen with this method then. Covered my VIN as soon as I got my TL. Scary to think no proof was needed

Sorry to hear man about your car being stolen that way.
The thieves must have had another device or good experience to steal your car because just with a key cut, they can't start your engine because the immobilizer isn't programmed.
They could open your door with the key, but not start the car using the key.

That's a very good idea to cover your VIN!

Too bad it's technically illegal to cover your VIN here in California. But it's like one of those small things that 99% of cops won't give you a ticket for

But if the thieves knew someone at a dealership and had the VIN of a particularly they wanted to take, wouldn't they be able to get a programmed key that would link to the immobilizer? At first I thought they grabbed it with a tow truck, but the spot was too narrow to take it like that

To program the new key's immobilizer, they need to reprogram your car's ECU to accept the immobilizer, so no without your car at the dealer, that's not possible.

Oh fair enough. It'll forever remain a mystery as to how they stole it then haha

Yes how did your friend get a key without the car actually being at the dealership. Im told I have to get it towed to the dealer so they can program a brand new key

My friend picked me up my key with the immobilizer not programmed.
All I was able to do with my key was lock and unlock - but not start the car since the immobilizer is not programmed.

I had to drive my TL to the dealership on a later date to get my immobilizer programmed.

This goes back to the OP. He just needs a key to open his door because his other keys are inside the car.

I can't recall how much a new key at the dealer was, but I think it was $60. Cutting is FREE.
Don't know if it's cheaper to hire a professional to open up the door.

I don't know if it matters or not but my friend is a customer of the dealership with an 06 MDX purchased there, so maybe they have all his file info opposed to it being some random guy going in with a VIN.

The key was already prepaid by me which is more surprising because all my friend did is go in, provide the VIN, pick up key, and leave. No proof, except he called me while at the dealer for my VIN, which is still not much proof because he could have been talking to a crime partner.

They can cut a key with the vin, without the car there .... but that key will only open the doors.

for the immobilizer chip within the key to be programmed so it actually starts the car, they will need your car there.

You do realize the programmers are as portable as a laptop? My locksmith came out into the parking lot and programmed mine. They take the unit on the road with them all the time. I don't know why everyone thinks it's nearly impossible to steal a newer car these days.

OP, I'd find a good mobile locksmith. They're all different when it comes to presenting proof of ownership. Probably the most cost effective option, unless you have AAA to get towed to dealership.

Please read my previous posts.

Nobody's saying it's nearly impossible to steal a newer car

Story05 speculated that HIS thieves could have just went to the dealership and had the dealership cut the key using his VIN and program the immobilizer and go to his house/parking lot and steal his car. The dealership can't program it without the car - and they require proof of ownership to program the immobilizer there.

That's specifically why I stated that his thieves must of had experience and another device to steal his car.

thanks i think I'll find a mobile locksmith since the dealer who's less than a mile away can even bother to send somebody to program the damn key at my home. Towing isnt that much I just don't know how they would tow it the way my car is positioned in my backyard driveway

Man you're still locked out of your car? That blows

And I'm actually glad my car was stolen, but I'm just so damn curious as to how the hell they did it! Portable immobilizer programmer sounds like the best way

yeah if the car was in a public place i would probably have killed myself by now. I've been riding my wife's Nissan Sentra(This Blows....... but not too bad) since Friday. The job will get done though. I actually just found a mobile locksmith who charges much less than a dealer and the key pad and products are factory honda/acura

If you have AAA they will cover, up to a certain dollar amount, the mobile locksmith fee.
