I've owned both a 3rd Gen TL-S and a E92 335i, and there is absolutely no comparison performance wise .... I still love the TYPE-S but it definitely cannot keep up, and is a lot slower when compared with the Beamer. Two different cars that excel at two different things...just my 2 cents

I don't know if understating power is a German thing or not....have no real familiarity with either Audi or VW. Had I looked to Audi I would most have likely bought a 3320lbs TT/RS which does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds & 12.1/113mph in the quarter on a posted crank horsepower of 335. Could be underrated

I think some of the surveys way overstate the various cars issues like the JD Power new car satisfaction survey that would list unhappiness with a cup holder placement as an issue equal to stalling in the middle of an intersection.

BTW: I am doing the first non-regular maintenance item on my 1998 Ranger this weekend. The A/C compressor crapped out after 13 years. I mail ordered a new Motorcraft one for $180 delivered.
That is amazing. Audi TT/RS looks like a fun car. And I agree with you on JD Power, I group consumer reports in the same category. I take some of their reliability ratings with a grain of salt. I've personally never owned an American branded car (and I will one day), but we have plenty in the family as well and Japanese branded cars.

I had a choice between a 2007 328ci with 100,000km and the 2007 TL-S with 73,000kms for the same $$$$. I choose the TL-S, primarily due to reliability. I would have been happy with either one, the TL is faster but the 328 was smoother. I liked the styling of both cars. It all boils down to personal tastes in the end.

If you're not getting a 335I, then I would say no to almost all BMWs minus maybe a M series.

BMW 3 series are known for a MAJOR drop in resale value. A 44k BMW goes for 18K in 2 years. As a Type-S 08 for 36K still goes for 23-30k in 4 years.
There is no noticeable turbo lag anywhere in the powerband on either the N54 or N55 335i; 290 ft lbs of tq, at the wheels starting at 1500 rpm. IMO, the 335i actually feels faster than it really is, whereas the TL's lack of torque makes it actually feel slower than it is. But of course, the 335i is the faster car.

And I have no idea where you got your resale figures, but they're absolute BS. The average selling price, taken from a total of (201) '09 335i's on Autotrader at this very moment is $34,359, and in reality, the '09's are closer to three years old right now. I also made sure to keep the convertibles out of the search, since they're pricier.

My ‘06 TL 6MT was close to my ‘04 330Ci ZHP 6MT in acceleration. Best start would win most of the time with the TL having the edge with both cars running in the low 14’s so I know how a TL feels when pulling hard.

My 335is is a sub 5 second to 60 car that can run in the low 13’s without a tune & 12’s with just a $300 piggy back unit & no other mods. This vid is a guys first time at the track in a duplicate of my car.

Takes a minute or so with some burnouts before it gets to the point, but the runs are pure stock 13.1 @ 108mph, 13.5 @ 106mph & 13.4 @ 109mph. Its a given that the IS is a little quicker then the I version but still the I is very quick.
The 335is is a low 13 second car, but the 335i is generally a 13.5-13.8 car, stock. A lot of stock 335i's are only trapping around 103 mph.

I used to have an 03 325i that was trouble free, so I'm deciding if I should go back or go to something new. I LOVE bmws, but i'm a 19 year old college kid and i'd like comfort, and performance. I'm highly educated when it comes to these cars..im not just any teenager that wants a flashy bmw or acura.
i'm looking at a 6spd manual 3rd gen TL or a manual trans e46 (2002-2005)
Any advice?
Thanks in advance.
I had been own the 05 tl auto then I trade it for a 05 330ci zhp manual after a year .. But I trade the bimmer back to a 07 tl-s last year .....I'm not joking..
If u want a car that have comfort and performance..I WILL SAY TL,,!!!!!!

i actually owned a e46 manual. really nice cars;the torque and power on these cars is awesome;though gas mileage does suck due to the gearing in transmissions. Im also 19; idk how much you work or if your parents help you out man; but as an independent teenager; the bmw is not a good idea.not now..they have lots of issues, mostly suspension and electrical to work out. Differential carrier bushings,LCA bushings, failed coil springs, secondary air pumps, fuel issues, etc. unless you find one with a warranty which will be hard to come by since they stopped in 06. GOOD LUCK! I just picked up a TL 6mt/nav. feels equally if not more luxurious, and you can get a lot more for your buck with a TL. just sayin

Agree, but a TL is about a 14.4 car stock. Using the 13.8 time as a base against 14.4 & a nominal 100mph trap speed that's a about an 80ft spread at the finish line.

The other thing is if you start to mod the cars for speed a $300 JB+ piggy back will put the 335i down in the low 13/109mph range & $300 invested in the TL will buy you almost nothing.

That being said I go back to my earlier statement & if it was me I would get as new a TL as I could afford because even DIY its cheaper to fix. You need to remember a used car out of warrenty/CPO is always a crap shoot.

Someone did not want the car anymore for some reason & that reason could be problems with the car.

BTW I sold my ‘06 TL 6MT for 18K. It had 50K+ miles on it & was in excellent shape. It was sold because I wanted a 2dr Coupe for a daily driver. So good cars are available if you shop well or know someone who is looking to sell.

What is this thread even about? Are you comparing a 3rd gen TL to the whole 3 series production line of BMW's?

If that's the case...325i<328i<330i<TL<335i<<<<M3. Assuming we are talking about similar years. Case closed.

IMHO I'd gladly trade in my TL for an Audi S4 hands down.

I own an E46 330xi and a TL. I'll give you a couple numbers...I spreadsheet everything because I'm a nerd! Remember though, these are only my numbers.

Maintenance cost per mile
TL-$0.1158
BMW-$0.2784

Cost of Ownership per mile (I should mention here I paid more for the TL)
TL-$0.568
BMW-$0.968

Its up to you..my two cents bimmers cost more to maintain but are more fun to drive.

Take that, old thread!

I have an old university buddy staying the night here. He drove out in his 2011 BMW 335d. Now, if I was ever to get a Bimmer and move to the 'burbs, it would be this one (I live in town and short trips/commutes are not good for diesel engines). He got from Calgary to Whistler on a single tank.

Better still, he let me drive it! I'm happy that I did. There is something to be said about German engineering and handling. My TL feels downright fluffy compared to the stiff-yet-luxuriousness of the 335d. However, after some coilovers and new front & rear sway bars, my car's handling will improve tenfold, with only a minor sacrifice to comfort.

Fit and finish? Aside from the superiority of the BMW leather to the TL's, I can't believe how poor the fit and finish of the Bimmer is. Everything just felt so plasticky in there. With the TL, getting in the car feels like slipping into a warm mud bath - just steeped in comfort. The BMW just felt so austere. So...well, German, really.

I'm happy that I got the chance to make this comparison myself - especially being such a huge BMW fanboy over the years. I'll take my TL any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
