Exclamation New TL: Anyone Have touchy Gas/Break pedal?

Funny Concept...

Noticed that with my TL, after driving it off the lot - My gas/break pedal was not touchy at all... Usually with a new car, my experience anyway, the break and gas pedals are extremely touchy.. Noticed with the TL, that the break pedal had give to it, with only 3mi on the car... I'm pretty used to just lightly touching the break pedal of a new car, but this wasn't the case..

Was everyone else's car like this? OR were your pedals touchy?

It would help if you told us what your previous cars were. Some cars have very sensitive & grabby brake pedal (like the stratus rental I had once) - which I hate because it could easily make me lose traction/spin out... I don't know if MT and AT brake pedals feel different, but mine (MT) is pretty sensitive, although I'd say there's a little "give."

The throttle is DBW, so whatever your feeling is most likely normal (seems like it's sometimes very responsive, sometimes not so much), you just need to get used to it.

If your breaks require a lot of force you could have low fluid or a leak in the vaccuum system. I have driven my father car(only a few feet, I don't even have my permit, and he wasnt there) but I barely had to touch the break for it to lock up(then again I have only driven a ford and that was a while ago in a parking lot). As NDX2 said the throttle is DBW, that also means it will adjust depending on the situation.

Previous car was an '03 Accord Sedan EX. Brakes were very touchy for at least 6 months after I got it...

Is it the fluid that determines how touchy the brakes are, or the wear on the brake pad? Maybe both? I'm thinking it's normal - but just so used to the car braking immediately on a light touch... Hard to explain I guess - Let me know

You could have some air in the brake line, but unlikely - if it's ok at cold starts, but gets worse then you should get it checked out and bleed the line. But if it feels the same all the time, don't worry about it. And unless you brake sooo much that you heat up the brake fluid beyond its boiling point, it shouldn't be a factor.

I think you're just paranoid. It's cool, it's just a phase of owning a new car.

My cousin has an 00 Accord, and I know there's very little travel in the brake pedal, but that means you get less control... you just need to get used to your TL.

**if you're really paranoid, just go drive another TL at the dealership and compare 'em.

Bleeding lines is a lot of work, its under warrenty, convince them to do it if you determine thats what you need done.

My TL is very touchy. Any sort of pressure on the breaks and you're flat spotting the tires

The brakes on my '04 5AT has never been touch with the exception for the first application after the rotors have been exposed to water which results in a layer of rust being formed on the surface. The water can either be in the form or rain or after I have washed the car. The rust builts up the microscopic clearance that exists between the pad and the rotor and will cause the first or 2nd brake application to be more "intense". But once the pads have cleaned off the rust, it's back to normal.

Overall, I have never found the brakes on the 5AT to be grabby. They have a nice firm feel that once can modulation easily. I consider the brake feel to be linear or that there is a proportional amount of braking to the amount of force applied to the pedal (read NOT grabby). The brake feel can worsen if the brakes are hot or if there is air bubbles in the line which will happen to all cars. That's why it's a good idea to bleed the brakes every 2 years.

The grabbiest brakes I have experienced occurred on the G35 sedan. It was terrible at city speeds. I lurched each time I touched the pedal.

Ah yes -- I have noticed this rust.. I believe it goes away after the first brake application - after they get wet..

Freaked me out at first!!

I'm beginning to see why there are so many posts about problems with the TL ... some of them apparently are coming with those pesky "break" pedals, and when you mash those buggers, something is bound to break.

Okay, okay, I just couldn't resist. (Pssssst ... it's BRAKE, not break.)

Your throttle should not be "touchy" at engine speeds of idle and just off idle. This is deliberate and is built into the software to minimize and/or eliminate the "surging" affect common to manual transmissions when in first gear and creeping in traffic. The engineers did this to help the driver avoid running into a vehicle in front.

If you whatmean by "touchy" is a sensitive or torquey feeling when small amounts of throttle are applied, this is also deliberate and is a VERY good thing.

I find brake pedal being highly sensitive right after I Start the car pulling off from parking lot. After few minutes, it seems to adapt to normal driving.

BTW Brake assist is great feature. It shortened stopping distance couple tmes at turning red lights

I concur. I had to stop short one time and it activated. It was like someone dropped an anchor out the back! I didn't brake all that hard but it had more to do with the speed I transitioned off the gas and onto the brake pedal that tripped it.
