i'm doing these as one-off customs. i use ultra high quality rare earth glow paints and my airbrush. during daylight the paints are translucent, and at night they glow. the green one glows for about 12 hours, it's glow fades down during those 12 hours, but even at 12 hours you can still see it at night.

it's very time consuming to tape off the lettering and checkers. for more detailed info, send me email.

cheers

very durable. the stuff i use is not from any craft store, etc., it is specially formulated base paint that has high end glow powders mixed in. this stuff is sold to commerical fishing tackle companies to "glow" fishing lures. multiple thin layers get applied with airbrush.

doesn't the paint need some light to "charge" this glow?

I'm figuring it does, so how long are you leaving the paint in light to get the glow in the above pic?

I'm getting at the point that this is really cool, but that sill is never exposed to light for any length of time. And I imagine that to get a bright glow like the above pic, the paint would need to be exposed to light for some significant length of time.

Props on the job, though! I curious as to your reply.

Vinyl???

I have access to a vinyl cutter and was thinking of making some vinyl decals in various colors to lay into those same cutouts he used paint for... That way if they get scratched or damaged, just replace them... Or if you get a hankerin' for a new color, you can just slap it in...

Should look the same, minus the glow... Unless they make glow in the dark vinyl...

On the CVAJS job... LOOKS FANTASTIC man... (Points AWARDED!) I'd suspect it needs subjected to light to glow as well, although if you could use the same stuff that's on watch faces and night sites for guns (tritium, I believe...) it would glow by itself... Bearing in mind the stuff is slightly radioactive however, I don't think you can pick that up at the craft store!!!

Did you determine a price on that????

I assume since you are just painting it, you can do it for any car assuming the sills aren't very complicated and the taping isn't too difficult???

Are you planning on doing a mail order deal with them or doing a core swap???

there has got to be an easier way, maybe making a stencil and re-using it for each sill. or just spraying the sill without a stencil, then wiping the excess off while wet and whatever is recessed will stay unwiped. just some suggesttions, but it looks hot!

Looks real good, Points for you. My only question is how long did you have to expose that area to light?

the "green" rare earth metals shine the longest:

after full charge (10 minute charge from 1000 lux), output is 25914mcd/sq.m (on LS-100 light meter)
note: A cyalume glow stick like those at festivals glows at about 20,000mcd/sq.m

the brightness does drop-off over time, from hour 9 to 12 output is 5mcd/sq.m

this is glow paint folks, uses no resources from the car and requires no wiring, no bulbs/leds to burn out, etc.

it's a neat effect.

possibly a stencil, but i don't have the tools to create a stencil to mask out the no-paint areas.

if demand becomes high enough then i'll outsource the stencil making (mask needs to be tight on the surface, and positioning must be 100% right-on or else it wont look correct).

the paint is solvent based, so it wont be nice to try and wipe off excess (paint is also expensive, so there will be no waste).

email me for your 1st question.

yes, it's just paint, can be done to just about anything. i use automotive masking vinyl tapes (they curve easy around bends and hold tight to the surface).

if new part is wanted i would need to get parts from dealer, or you send me yours (no core deals).

The more I look at it the more I WANT it!

Would it still glow as bright as it does in the pic 3 years from now? Even after a full charge?

glow paints are like rechargeable batteries. it can can recharge millions of times. with proper sealing the paint would easily last 10 years outdoors. it's the nature of rare earth materials that absorb light then release it.

Guys Product Looks Hot, But this is not what I am looking to do. My Plates are cut now and all I am waiting for is the graphic plate to show you the final Mock Setup. My Plates will have wires and will look and light up just like a Mercedes. These are great but again not the look I want for mine.

Will keep you all updated.

Thanks
Dave

Sorry for such a slow process but we have started this project from scratch

indeed yours would look different and very very cool, and not need the recharge like glow paints need.

however, (IMHO) glow paints give me more artistic freedom. i have not really "used" my airbrush, now is the time i will.

hope to see your lighted sills soon.

cheers

no. if you airbrush it less than 1 fl.oz. if you want deeper color than multiple coats is suggested. also depends on if you'll do all the checkers or not, then you may need more, but not a pint.

Does anyone know if there is any blue glow in the dark paint that perfectly matches the blue color of the lights inside the tl? I have found some "Pure Blue" Glow in the Dark paint online but I wanted to know that the colors would be very close before i spent my money on this expensive stuff.

here's another online place that sells glow paints and powders. i think my buddy gets his stock from here, not sure. they have blue, not sure if that's what you want.

Okay. So to recharge I now need to keep my doors open. Do I do this on a sunny day going downtown or will my blue LED lights in my doors charge them?

LED's will not work. glow paints need UV. this is indeed the "pitfall" to glow paints. there should be enough ambient light if the car is outside during the day. tints that block UV need more time than without tint. every mod has a price to pay.

For the glow paint to re-charge, how much UV time does it need to fully re-charge. And how long would the glow paint last if fully re-charge every 3-5 days for example??? THanks!!!!

I agree with you guys that it looks great. but who really wants to charge their door sills? and that blue one only goes for 2 hrs. its just a hassle for some cool lighting, when u can connect some simple wires. Im still with supercomputers with his project.

Looks very nice! From the numbers on the paint supplier's website (above), it doesn't seem like that intense glow will last for more than a few minutes though. According to that site, after one minute, the brightness is reduced from 25914mcd/m2 to 3560mcd/m2. And after ten minutes, you're down to 590mcd/m2. So yes, you'll have some glow, but it won't necessarily be very bright. It may be worth the trade off, however, just so you can get the OEM sill look. I'd rather go blue though if the intensity isn't going to be there anyway.

there are trade-offs using glow paints. however, as i mentioned earlier in the thread, i can be very artistic with glow paints and my airbrush. the sills could be 3 colors, duo-colors, etc.

even a dim glow from the sill at night still looks rather cool.

cheers
