New Discovery on SPORT-SHIFT logic

today i was going somewhere in the rental 07 TL I had and just decided to gun it. Then while gunning it i putt it in SS and it shifted itself just like if was still in Auto mode. Well I tried it again and it worked properly. After a little wasted gas and some curiosity, I figured out with trial and error that the SS feature cannot be accessed when the RPM is above 4.5k . I also tried this in my 04 TL and got the same result. Just thought I should post this because I have seen a few posts on SS not working properly in the past few months.

yeah, i realized a while back that starting in L (to stay in 1st gear longer) and then shifting to SS, the TL would automatically shift from 2nd to 3rd...it didn't occur to me this happened above 4000 rpm till you just mentioned it...anything below that and shifting from L to SS would stay in 2nd...

Do you use your TL as an ice cream car often?

..sounds like a recipe for an accident or two . Not doubting your ability to drive or anything, just be careful with the ice cream, oh yea watch the road when you can as well

alright, let me go into greater detail since you all are reading into that post too much...when i say multi-task, i don't mean i've got a cell phone in each ear, PDA in my hand, and laptop in the passenger seat...i mean there are times when i have to hold onto my chinese take-out bag so it doesn't tip over...or my wife wants to hold my hand rather than have me shift (fuck all of you right now that are picturing this ) ...or i'm holding ice cream (as already stated above) so it doesn't spill....little things like that are what i mean by multi-task...and yes, my eyes are always on the road, but thanks for looking out...

Hmmm...this wouldn't apply to the TL-S now would it? If I recall correctly, the SS on the TL-S is different. It was redesigned with down-shif revv matching as well as it being specifically sports oriented. I'm still in the 'breaking-in' period so I've been shifting right before the 4k RPM mark...I'm at 330 miles right now...can't wailt for 600!!!

The 07 TL-S Auto stays where you want to. ALL the way up to rev limiter 7,000. I know, a few times I forgot I had it in manual mode

NOOOO you have it wrong. What i meant was if the car was in full auto mode, then put in SS after 4k RPM, it would act as if in full normal for the first gear change then give you control to shift after this point.

example:
You are driving and gun it, then you relize you want SS. You throw it into SS at 5k RPM. The car switches from 2nd -> 3rd as if in full auto, then hits the rev limiter in 3rd gear requiring an input to shift.

I can't answer, I drive in auto most of the time. If I feel goofy I put into manual when I am at stop sign. Its 1 or the other with me. Sometimes if I am driving in auto, and I want to downshift at the intersection, I go into manual and it stays in the gear I was already in, then I downshift like a real manual to take the turn/corner.

My SS works just fine. I only dont have full control in 1st gear, unless im gunning it. Other then that it works just like a sports shift system should.

I too have an 04.
