new car smell

I remember reading this earlier but I can't find the thread. Are there any products to give your car that "new car smell" again?

I find that conditioning the leather every few months helps a little.

After 10 months, my interior still has a bit of that smell, except of course for those
occassional moments when I

I picked up a bottle of stuff called ODOR OUT & FRAGRANCE. The scent is leather and I always spay it on the floormats after I clean my car. It definitely works and the smell lasts for about one week. I bought it at a local Kwik Kar Lube & Tune. I think I've had the bottle for two years now and it's only half empty.

I recommend it highly over those little cardboard things that you hang in the car!

Considering that the new car smell is mostly PVC outgassing and other noxious/toxic gases, why would you want it? I always leave the window open a bit until it goes away!!! And that film that coats the windows? The stuff that is so hard to remove? It consists mainly of those same condensed gases - you do not want that shiznit in your lungs and bloodstream, believe me.

But anyway, I agree with the others - find a leather conditioner that smells good to you - I like Meguiar's Medallion, but smell is highly personal so find the one that "does it" for ya. I find that the deal with keeping a car's interior nice smelling is to keep it devoid of smells - no food smells, no Lysol smell, no pine tree from the mirror smell - just fresh. Keeping the carpets vacummed and clean helps a lot.

Fabreze and other "odor eaters" can help keep a car's smell pleasant. I like orange/citrus based products myself, and try to avoid those way over the top scents that Pep Boys sells. Some of them are so heavy that they must be used by gangstahs to cover up the smell of a corpse.

Griots garage sells a spray that smells like leather..it works well, and keeps my TL smelling like new. Keep your windows up when garaged, use the Griots leather spray, and you should be more than happy with the results. Last year, I pulled up to a drive-in bank, and the girl inside smelled the car from inside and asked me if I just purchased the car. It was the spray leather smell she noticed, but it does smell like a brand new car...if you've got a leather interior.

I use it in my 99 and it still smells like new. It was mentioned in a thread reference above too.

That's likely the same stuff I use, just under a different name. Works great!

I have used Griot's products for about 6 years and they are high quality items. The leather conditioner and spray really do help to retain the "new car" presence. Their stuff is a bit pricey, but well worth it.

A few years into ownership of my old TL (99), I left a new leather jacket in the car over the weekend. It was not deliberate, and it didn't last long, but the car smelled great Monday.

I've heard that the new car smell doesn't really come from the leather interior but from the glue when the windshield is installed. Anyone else hear about this?

I haven't, but it is baloney.
Most of the smell is from the carpet, adhesives used in various sub-assemblies in the interior, and the PVC's outgassing. I am sure the windshield adhesive contributes, but it goes away quickly - if you have ever had a windshield replaced, you will recall that the smell is gone in 2-3 days, while "new car smell" sticks around for quite a while longer.

Bought a new house lately? Many "greenies" warn of the dire consequences of "new house air", and it is based in fact, although exagerrated in impact IMO. But insulation, and especially carpet, outgas a lot of junk. As in adivising to keep your car window cracked, or the fan on at all times ina new car, so I recommend sourcing fresh air circulation ina new house.

Same issue, mostly the same causes, mostly the same solutions.

And there is a new car scent - it is called "my wife's latest potpourri discovery".
