that new car smell

I was test driving a TL and I noticed that new car smell.
Where is the smell mainly from? Is it from the leather or the dashboard or the carpet on the floors? Is there anyway to reproduce the new car smell in a car?

That my friend is "off gassing" and its probably not real good for your lungs although it may clear up your sinuses.

Some 04TLs even give you reinforced gassing after turning on your AC... very disgusting...

It's definitely not from the leather because I never owned a car w/leather before and they smell the same as the new TL.

if you get in an Audi, BMW or Jaguar with leather it's a different smell. The Acura smells like plastic...

Few would say the same about my off-gassing.
And for that I certainly don't need a new car!

HERE's A TIP...if you guys want the new car smell back after it's gone...just buy new floor mats OEM and not some aftermarket floor mats you can get at automotive shops like PEP BOYS>..go to the dealer and get the OEM floor mats....It's doesn't come from the leather or the plastic or anywhere else....it's in the floor mats ...trust me..i've done this everytime i sell my cars and people always comment on the "NEW CAR SMELL"... ..just my .02 cents.....

oh yeah if you want to know how i got this info..i just discovered it by accident...i some soda in my F-150 and it stained the floormats....and since i couldnt just get one, i had to purchase a whole set..to keep the stock look i just went to the dealer..and after i put them...lo & behold.."THE NEW CAR SMELL" was there

I've been in MANY brand new cars without floormats in them, and It still has the new car smell. So what now?

Actually, you can also get some "new car smell" at your local auto parts store to "freshen" up your interior. That said, and not yet owning a TL, I'm not sure if the bottled new smell and the TL smell would be the same.

I noticed a thin film on the inside the front windshield near the bottom. The defroster doesn't remove it. My assumption is its the outgassing from the plastic.

Just waiting for it to warm up here so I can clean it up.
Is there anything better than Windex?

I have tried getting the new car smell in a can. It doesn't smell like the new car smell that came when the car was new. SO getting new floor mats will bring back the new car smell?

It's the plasticizer leaching out of the vinyl in the dash and adhesives in the carpet. I think a study a while back determined that it caused cancer (probably in California where everything probably has a label that it causes cancer). Anyway, you'll be cleaning the film off the glass this Summer when it gets hot.

This "off-gassing" was so bad in my 1989 Maxima after a year of complaints Nissan finally replaced the car for me with free upgrades to have me shut up and not bring on a class action suit.

The off gassing was so intense that from the outside of my car looked liked I hung white sheets in the windows. On a hot day by the time I cleaned the windshield from one side to the other the side I started with was already turning white. Windex helped to clean but it still had blueish residue and certain sunlight angles made it very difficult to see. They did not replace the car until they had replaced the roof liner, pillar liners, and dash in my old one trying to correct the problem.

The replacement 1990 Maxima had leather seats and just a fraction of the off-gassing. Other problems abounded in my 1990 Maxima however. To me Nissan cars put on a great facade everthing below the skin is shoddy.

I have talked sooooo many people out of buying Nissans and Infitis, to the point I can appreciate there new cars but I am not sure I can seriously consider purchasing one.

I bet you can guess where I stand on the G35 vs TL issue.
