Need to make a hard decsion

Ok so heres the story I got a new 2006 civic-ex navi months ago when I got my license now it has 5,000 miles and was just rear ended by my friend following me to my house. He had his moms expedition and wasnt looking at the road when I stoped for a train crossing and he hit me going about 40mph. So my car is totaled and I already have the check from the insurance. Now it comes to the decesion a few months after I got my civic my dad passed away unexpectedly on a bussiness trip. My dad had a silver on black 2002 MDX with 96,000 miles on it and isnt in the best of shape from being parked at airports alot but was always clean its also on a 2nd transmission which I think was due to a recall. My dads car has just been sitting in the garage as he left it we went in it to get some stuff from it but other than that its just been sitting there because we have no use for it. My mom said I can take his MDX if i want it or I can take it and combine a trade in on the mdx with the insurance check and get something nicer. When we worked up what I can afford it came out to about $34,000 which can get me a 2007 TL non navi. But when I really thought about it do I really need that Iam I just being a jerk by taking all that money from their car just so I can get a nicer car. Or should I just use his MDX and I can give my mom back some of the money my parents spend for my civic less than a year ago??? I dont know what to do because I think my mom doesnt want to see my dads car gone.
BTW my mom also has a 2004 MDX-NAVI-RES.

Do the right thing... give your mom back some money... she just lost her husband and you honestly does not need a 34k car as your first ride.

I am sorry to hear you lost your dad...

Get a nice used car, you might can find a 6MT 2003 CL-S and still have money to give your mom back.

I understand her not wanting to see your dad's car gone. Be there for her and let her know that your dad lives on in your hearts and minds, not in a vehicle.

Stay strong kiddo.

With gas always going up I'd seriously consider if I wanted to be paying for the additional gas the TL uses, premium to boot.

A Navi Civic would be pretty efficient even when driving in a spirited manner whereas the TL can get thirsty when you put your foot to the mat.

Welcome to the forum. I'm with the other posters: get another Civic for now instead of a TL, or the MDX. Discuss selling your dad's MDX with your mom; it may be good for her psychologically to let go of the MDX. The money from selling it can go back to your mom. You'll save a couple thousand in gas using the Civic instead of the MDX, and probably save a couple of thousand on insurance as well.
Best wishes for a better new year!

First, welcome to Acurazine.

Second, my condolences regarding your father.

Third, sorry to hear about your accident, if a rearender was bad enough to total a Civic, you are lucky to be here to talk about it.

Last, I concur with the other posters, now is not the time to get a TL. Ordinarily we'd say go for it but with your situation, you can either use the MDX (which your mom may not be ready psychologically to let go of anyway) or sell it, buy another Civic navi, and give the rest back to your mom.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. I also agree with others that it is not the time to spend all of your money on a TL. Unfortunately, you may have to grow up a little faster than you would have with your father around. I don't know how your relationship is with your mom and how many siblings you have but I would suggest a very open discussion with your mom about your families finances. You have a lot of things to look forward to. Getting through school and finding a good job should be a top priority as well as supporting your mom through this difficult period. Nice cars can come later.

Good luck and I wish you and your family the best!

Sorry to hear about your loss. Maybe you can find an 06 for less then 32K. If you want to save money, get a Civic Si w/Navi. Really nice car, Honda reliability, quicker then your EX, and about $10K less then the maximum you can afford.

i'd say to use the insurance money to give to your mother or put it in a savings/money account so it can mature. Use your dad's MDX and and just take it to acura to get whatever it needs to get fixed.

Any other time I would have said get a TL, but seeing the situation you're in and the fact that your only 17, I would say to get something practical such as a civic or as csmeance said, just use the MDX and get it fixed up. You're still young and you have plenty of time to get a TL or something else you may like better in a year or two.

sorry to hear about your dad. getting a another civic is the right choice. make your dad proud by being responsible and doing the right thing. as much as we all love our cars, they are material things. family comes first. good luck on your choice.

Thanks guys, As of right now my mom doesnt want me to get another civic, only because she didnt like how crushed it got in the accident. I tried to explain to her that cars are suppose to crush alot to take the impact but thats hard to explain to moms, so she wants me to get something bigger. She suggested the TL only because we still had a 04 TL brochue on it from when my mom got her MDX but I cant go through with spending that much money on the TL. My mom and aunt went looking at cars for me when I wasnt home and they came up with a leftover 2006 Accord coupe, they had a EX-L and a EX-V6 the prices range from $22,xxx to $24,xxx which is not much more than the Civic Si and alot less than a TL. Iam not in any hurry to get another car because Iam using the 2004 mdx and my mom has a rental maxima which she likes. My older brother said when his lease on his explorer ends he might take my dads MDX. And she seemed happy that it would still be in the family. Who knows I might just use the MDX untill my brother takes it then I will get new car. So how do you think the accords are my parents never had one so I dont know good they are??

Accords are built like rocks. I have a friend with a 93 and its got at least 130k and it drives strong. Someone else I knew had a 93 with 170K and it drove strong untill it was totalled in a wreck. Accords are very good cars I would diffenently look into it.

What about a preowned TL for you ........ 04-05? 06 if you can find one around on a lot....

Sorry to hear about your Dad - I know the feeling as I lost mine when I was 19......that was 21 years ago and it still seems like it was yesterday. Always be there for your Mom :-)

FYI- insurance with a coupe is going to be much higher because it is more of a racey (right word?) car. I'd also show you mom some pics of the totaled Tl's on the board (gallery somewhere in Picture section) and tell her that the cars were made to crumple in specific areas to absorb the impact so the cabin would stay intact and protect the people inside. As stated before, the TL is too much for you at this time and something less would work. The best shot using the info provided would be to deposit the insurance money, have the MDX worked on so it is in very good condition. Keep the MDX util the lease on your bro's explorer is up and give the MDX to him (take some money if you want to for it) and buy yourself a car which will suit you. By then you might be able to get an acura a bit cheaper as the 08 TL is a MMC (mid-model change) so a TL from 04 to 06 will be a bit cheaper, 07's will be a bit less then the 08's. Also look for some honda forums so you can see how the car is, reliability, common issues, etc.

csmeance, the 2007 TL is the MMC.

The TL is due for a FMC (Full Model Change) for 2009.

The Accord is a good compromise for you.

Good luck and take care of your Mom, she needs you!

I would look into a TSX. I am surprised no one mentioned it here. It's bigger than a Civic, but a better car overall and also cheaper than the TL.

Sorry about your dad. Stay strong.

I say if the MDX just has some cosmitic damages, Take some of your insurance money to get it cleaned up / painted and give the rest back to your mom. This way you can return some money back to your mom and keep the MDX in the family.
