Need help fast. Car is in the bodyshop and I have questions.

I just got the repair estimate online and going over it I found several things that worry me.

First is the windshield that is going to be replaced. The new one is about $380. Didn't the OEM windshield use a sound coating that drove the price up to $800-1200?

Second, non OEM grill and trim piece that goes on the hood at the grill. I'm not sure if these are acceptable quality. The inner fenders are aftermarket also but I'm not as concerned.

Reconditioned rims..... Mine were perfect until the accident. I guess if the new ones are in the same shape they will do since they're not a wear item.

Spot painting.... The hood has a couple scratches down to the primer. Estimate notes spot matching and of course clear coat. Same for the bumper cover. Is spot painting acceptable or should the entire panel be painted?

A couple items like a used axle I'm not going for but the other items I'm not sure about.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have to sign this thing tomorrow. Paint/body work is my weak spot.

I would just talk to your insurance or their insurance, whoever is paying for it, and demand OEM parts. My last 2 wrecks, the other persons insurance tried giving me non-oem parts and i told them that wasnt happening. Both finally agreed and gave me the full price for genuine oem parts. Its worth a try, chances are it will work, and the worst that will happen is they will not give you what you want and you'll be in the same position you are right now. Good luck. Hope everything works out for ya.

use ONLY NEW OEM PARTS, THE CAR MUST BE RESTORED TO PRE-ACCIDENT CONDITION. Yes, I'm yelling this at you. Don't settle for less. This is your hard earned money that just got scratched/dented/etc. BTW, what happened????

yes the sound coating raises the price of the windshield by quite a bit.

i dont remember the exact pricing; but it was incremental in helping with the sound deadening in the cabin

its your car, insist on only oem....have the car done correctly, any body shop that is trying to make money by using non oem parts is trying to work with your insurance company and not with you...find another shop....go to your acura dealer and find a shop through them....

The painting u may have an issue with cause i just had my car in the body shop and they only painted the bumper...insurance would not let them blend the bumper to the fender and hood, whicj is what the body shop wanted to do.
The adjuster said the bumpers do not match on the acura to begin with

Spot painting "can" be done, but it's probably not going to match. If they spot a panel, they have to cut down the clear in the affected area, spray base, then pearl (if WDP), then clear the entire panel. If it were only 2 stage paint, then there's a better chance of matching.

I would NEVER let them spot paint MY car.

I have an aftermarket windshield and I don't have any excess noise lol, dont worry bout the windshield, it'll probably crack first time you get on the highway and you can replace that later... as for the other body parts and front facia, I would insist on new unushed non junkyard parts... reconditioned wheels are fine aswell... used axle not so much

This makes my head spin. All the money we pay for premiums and then its time for the money to go the other way its nickles and dimes. Say NO to reconditioned wheels. They wont match. I can spot a "reconditioned" wheel from 10 feet away. Mdxs used the Acura acoustigate duplate laminated windshields. Not sure if thats what you meant. My only comment is....did your car have oem stuff on it before the accident? Then it damn well better have oem stuff when you get it back. Used axle I would let slide but as far as panels, glass and wheels...

man you pay out the ass every month for something like this. for that tiny percent of IF it happens.

well it happened, now you're entitled to reap the benefits. and that is to have your car EXACTLY the way it was.

Also something to consider: If they are gonna put used, reconditioned and 3rd party parts on your car to replace original, then they better pay you for depreciation.

Thanks for all the help. I've got them to agree to all original parts. Going to sign the estimate right now. I don't feel too guilty, almost 32 years old, been paying insurance since I was 16 and this is my first claim.

It turns out the windshield is made of something called "acoustiglass". The bodyshop and insurance people had never heard of it. Cost was close to $900.

As for the accident, I felt the urge to take the TL offroad over a curb and through a field lol. It popped my newly installed tweeters out of the dash and looked horrible with them hanging by the wires. The reason for it I'm not saying yet because I may have found a bad flaw in the ABS but it would be unfair to say until I know for sure.
