Thumbs up My TL saved my life last night

Last night, I was heading back from San Francisco and heading towards Emeryville to drop off my friends. The I-80E off ramp is wierd because there is a carpool lane the splits off into an exit and has those plastic pylons and a cement median.

I am trying to get into the right lane doing about 70 mph, but my friend's head was blocking the mirror and this Civic won't let me into the lane, eventhough I was signaling for at least 10 seconds .

I look at my blind spot and he just moves out the way, and I turn back foward and I see the median rocketing towards me .

With hands at 10 and 2, I swurve away with about a second left to avoid the median!

Thanks to the TLs VSA program and superb suspension, I didn't loose control and leveled out in the lane.

To those people who say the 3rd Gen TL is not a great handling car, I say .

Now if you will excuse me, I am going to kiss my TL

VSA or any stability program is really useful. Lots of people don't want electronics making decisions for them but I'm all for it.

That's why it's always on by default. Glad to hear you didn't have an accident and everything is all right.

Thanks everyone. It was quite the experience and with the problems I have gone through with my car, I am still glad I bought this car.

If I was still driving my 2k3 Nissan Altima, I wouldn't be typing right now.

Glad everyone's OK.

Exactly where was the Civic in the right lane in relation to you? Could he have been in a position where it may have been hard to see your directionals? If so, this further makes my case for blinking front fender markers or turn signal mirrors.....still standard on the '06 TSX and RL! Remember, our 3G TL is still THE ONLY CAR ON THE ROAD with front fender side marker lights that don't blink with the turn signals.

The tip of his car was at my rear right passenger door, so he may not have seen it, but it's night and my turn signal was flashing blind red. I agree with you that the side markers need to blink. I thought I saw a mod on the boads for that.

I find our front signals are visible from 3/4 way of our car. So I would of seen it if I was at rear passenger door.

lol such drama... Maybe if you had slowed down and pulled in behind the other car. Sounded like neither of you wanted to yield to the other... cars do not save lives it is just like guns do not kill people.

I actually did slow down, but he decided to slow down at the same time, and I had to make the move, or get creamed.

Well, I was heading off of the bay bridge towards Emeryville. I took the I-80 E exit towards Sacramento and when you get near the Powell St. Exit (Emeryville), there is that funky carpool lane that splits from I-80E, that's where the close call happened.

Just one more indication and real-life demonstration of the cumulative virtues of this car.

Now I ask you, where can you get the combination of quality, safety, features, useful successfully applied technology (NOT technology for the sake of justifying a higher price as in the grossly overhyped German cars such as the BMW with its disastrous i-Drive and the new Passat with its idiotic electronic parking brake), superb ergonomics and quality interior, reasonable price and high resale value, rankings near the top of customer reliability and satisfaction surveys, pure driving pleasure and fun, absolutely class-leading Navigation and ELS 5.1 DTS surround-sound audio system (arguably the BEST in any car at any price), that the Acura TL represents? The answer: nowhere at this time.

Bravo Acura and all the best to you, Lister00169! May you continue to have many, many more positive experiences in this superb example of automotive engineering.

By median what do you mean exactly? Would it truly have been a bad accident, or just a dinged up TL?

Take away the ELS 5.1 DTS and you can get that in the TSX.

Well, you know the cement crash barrier medians that split the north and southbound lanes of most major highways, that's what I would have hit at the starting point of it head-on.

Most all cars have VSA today and many have great suspensions. You cannot say that if you were driving any other car the results would have been different. By the way the tires have a lot to do with it as well.

No doubt, but my Altima was the base 2.5 S, no VSA, mediocre tires and no ABS. So I can safely say I would have had a harder time keeping control of the car, if I subjected it to the kind of driving theatrics that happened.

Some of you may disagree with what I have to say, but here goes.

I lived in SF for 30 years and I've seen jerks like that before . Early on when I was 19 or 20 a buddy of mine told me that if the driver in the lane next to you won't let you in the lane at all, just ride on the lane marker/line for a few seconds, but don't go into his lane just yet. He'll think that you're an idiot and that you don't realize that he's there, but you really do know he's there. The guy backs off and the lane is now open. Of course take the passive approach first like signaling, speeding up or slowing down and then moving over. Sometimes drastic measures have to be taken; however, be careful of road rage as this approach can set someone off. But heck if you really need to get into the lane vs. getting killed by the median, then you just gotta to do what you gotta do. This works for me 95% of the time (most back off, some asswipes just won't let you in), but I try to avoid this tactic as much as possible. Just something I learned along the way. Glad to hear that you're ok.

I'm not interested in taking it away. It would not then be the combination I specified, would it now?!

well I am sure it will be better than the stang, but it is not like you are tracking through the snow without a care in the world. You would be better off with blizzacks... check it out on another part of this site...
