my TL
hello there... this is my first post and im looking for some help...
i want to make my car really quick off the line (0-60 time) like low 5's maybe? im tired of ppl wanting to race from my high school and im not sure if ill win so i dont race, so i want to know what i can do to resolve that problem?
im from texas and i just got my 2004 white TL windows tinted.
Here's what i want to do to my car:
1. Smoke out lights
2. Put Greddy Exhaust (any other better exhaust for cheaper?)
3. Fujita CAI
4. Spark Plugs (do they help?)
5. Pulley (whats the best?)
6. Spacer (whats the best?)
7. Looking for blue break calipers....
8. And will 20's fit good on the car?
9. Lastly, where can i find a J-shift J-pipe?
Any insight, please please please help me out!! i would greatly appreciate it

power, throttle response, MPG...
i would do intake, and tb spacer first. and then free up your exhaust with RV6 pre-cat deletes, then jpipe and 3rd cat delete to any exhaust really, the greddy is good but drones i believe?

If your looking for quick off the line then you better shelf the idea of 20" rims...... this will make your car signifigantly slower off the line. A larger/heavier will hurt your gear ratio along with adding more unsprung weight to the car resulting in slower acceleration.
For better performance/acceleration look at:
CAI
J-Pipe
Test Pipe
Cat Back
Pre-Cat deletes (you may want to look into your smog laws first)
UR underdrive pulley
Spacer
this is about the bulk of what you can do short of going forced induction.
As far as blue calipers you will need to have them painted, make sure you use the right paint and prep them (or have them prepped) properly prior to paint otherwise they will look like $hit in no time.

Low 5's? Not likely. Low 6's, maybe high 5's. (Assuming you're a 5AT?). 6MT, you'll get closer.
20? Really? In HS? Probably not, I guess, but don't start right off the bat lying, seriously. You're better off not displaying an age at all. And you really *don't* NEED to race, do you? Doing it for fun at a track or something is one thing, but to show off? Come on, you don't need to proove anything, you're driving a TL, that says enough about your taste and sensibility.
Speed = $$$. Fact of life. All the things you mentioned cost roughly the same; what I mean is all the After Market exhausts are similar in price; same for CAI's, etc. Yes you can save a few $$ here and there.
By the time you *really* investigate each mod, you'll know the cost and approx HP increase.
Twenty inch wheels will fit and don't look bad. IMHO, 19's have the best look; 18's agruably best balance of performance and looks; lthough some 19's are super light weight. 20's are bad choice if your goal is speed.

low 5's.... good luck!!
you'll need a full 2.5" engine-back exhaust system with a supercharger, custom CAI out of the blower...
i would ball park my FULLY modded N/A TL-S 5AT in the mid 5's... and im pretty sure my car is equally fast to a supercharged TL-P.....
you want low 5's? go trade in your car for a RWD car
the TL is FWD, and you can never get a good 0-60'

Biggest single improvement for 0-60 would be a set of dragradials on stock rims. If you have a 6mt you could really take advantage of the traction and probably knock a second off the stock 0-60.
And not racing because you might lose is gay. I purposely look for cars that might beat me. It's more fun than picking on Civics.

i raced a twin turbo supra with 35lbs of boost, kinda my friend in his clk63amg black series, raced him, while i raced some lexus couple with a turbo(or 2, not sure) and lost. then the lexus raced the benz and i attempted to race the supra, i got spanked...then after being beat that badly, i decided to pick on a civic but it turns out he had a turbo too

What do you want more? There's no right or wrong. However, suspension can serve to be a performance and aesthetic mod. Looks are important, but so is performance. It's up to you.

I'm more about performance.... almost anything I get for looks will usually affect performance anyway, why not get the best of both worlds? Wider tires for wider rims, all the details aside will usually give you more traction. Some performance mods on the other hand, you won't even be able to see..... but they're definitely worth it. The only time you'll see an SC is if you pop the hood..... but every single time you get on the gas, you'll feel and hear it.
Then again, usually I'd say that all show and no go is but you have a TL so you can really do whatever the hell you want.

I say you need to hook up your ride wif some dope AEM, Brembo, and Greddy stickers. that's all the looks you need if you put them on the car right.. not to mention the performance benefits.

To answer your questions:
1. Won't give you performance, actaully reduce due to weight addition
2. Greddy Exhuast - very good and free-flowing, if you want cheaper get some custom piping done with some greddy mufflers attached.
3. CAI- CAI will be good to add about 8 WHP at most.
4. Spark-plugs - only good to do if you are over 60K as it will help improve efficency.
5.Pulley - only 2 exist, the UR STOCK and UR Under-drive. Both a much lighter than stock and allow you to reach the power-band faster. If you plan on doing a sound system later, get the stock.
6. Spacer - P2R spacers
7. Brakes - do you want to paint the brakes or do you want a big-brake kit? If the latter, expect to spend in the neighborhood of around 1k + Labor for Wilwoods and a bit more for the Rotora's which are larger.
8. 20's will fit, but reduce performance since they are heavy. Look into some lightweight 18's, I think enkei makes ones that are around 17 lbs.
9. You can buy the J-Pipe from ATLP, Rv6 or excelerate. Also excelerate will have most of the items listed here for sale too.
Modding the TL is quite a bit expensive, to do all the above expect it to total around 4K. Also if you want more performance there are:
1. Pre-Cat deletes
2. Ported and Polished Intake Runners
3. Test Pipes
4. High Flow Cats
5. Supercharger
6. Methanol Injection
7. Weight Reduction
8. Suspension work

If your looking to go performance only and do some serious numbers at the track, sell your car!! Get a IS 350 or G35 <---very fast off the line.
BUT if you are compelled to make your car faster then start modding.
Performce mods:
-CAI - AEM, Injen or fujita $240-300 Depending on brand
-Jpipe- ATLP, RV6 or excellerate $320-400 Depending on brand
-UR Pulley w/ gates belt- PM excellerate $225
-Catback Exhaust- ATLP, EVO2 or XLR8 $900-1050
-Progress Rear Sway Bar- PM excellerate $140 ( i believe)
-Test/Race Pipe- ATLP,Rv6 or Excellerate $80-125
-Precat Deletes- Rv6 $ 250
IMO forget the 20"(no brainer) and the spacer is a waste of money.
You can also reduce the weight on your car. Search TL Diet and read that thred. You will shave off a decent amount of weight off your car.

My feeling is that the TL is fast enough, if you wanted to be a staggeringly fast car then you bought the wrong vehicle... that said, hp isn't everything and I would definitely do a suspension upgrade first: both performance and looks In the end though you're going to have to make a choice, and most TL's I see on this site really are a compromise of both.

20's do you slow down, but not THAT much
when i had my 20" Rays (32lbs per front wheel / 34lbs rear wheel) i raced my buddies 6MT 350Z... he had an intake and exhaust... and i did not lost !! i didnt tear his car apart, but he didnt beat me...we were pretty close, but i had the advantage in the end
In my opinion... Ehxaust + Intake = 15whp.... 20" wheels = negative 15whp.... so spending $1200 to go faster, and then $2000 to go slower.... is a bit of an oxymoron...
i spent like $3000 making my car fast, then i spent $4000 on 20's that slowed it right back down.. the ONLY ONLY reason why i sold my 20" wheels
