I used 1/4" wide thin masking tape, one mostly used by painters to mask for flames etc on body work. This gives a sharp and clean edge to the paint. After the masking, use 3M synthetic steel wool to rough up the edge, clean with paint cleaner, lay 3~4 fine coats of hi-heat paint and when its dry unmask the tape and bake the knob for 10 mins in an oven at 300 degrees .

Thanks, it looks really good. I was not to pleased with how my painting came out. I might have to redo it with your method.

Oh, i thought you were asking how I painted the lines rather than the "TL" engraving.

To paint the engraving you'd use paint filling method. You would need a syringe, red/black paint and some paint thinner. Mix 10 mm of paint with some paint thinner, make sure that the mixed paint's viscosity is light enough to pass through the syringe needle with ease. Gently drop a couple of drops in the engraving and work it around nicely along the edge till you have a smooth fill .

Wow...beautiful work!

Any plans for a TL-S 6MT version? Perhaps replace the "TL" logo on the existing 6MT knob that you made with only the "TypeS" logo?

I'd be interested....

How about a 6 speed MT knob with the 1-2-3-4-5-6-R powdercoated in black and instead of the "TL" on the bottom, have the "Type S" logo with the word "Type" powdercoated in black and the "S" powdercoated in red. So basically this design with the "Type S" logo instead of the "TL".

I think that design would be a big hit with the 6MT Type S guys on here. What do you think?

i would definitely be interesting in one like this. Instead of TL letters with the Type S logo.

Man, you got skills.

I agree that Solidworks is a powerful CAD system. I use it at work to redesign a production machine that needs improvement. Kind of makes me want to use it and design a shift knob myself though I do not have the machinist skills that you have.

Props on your incredible talent. Just bought a TL a few months ago. Kind of wish I had the money to purchase a TL earlier to have been able to get my hands on one of these.

If you ever get the urge of making one of the R8 shift knobs for a base TL again, let me know. I would definitely take one of your hands. I will never look at my stock shift knob the same again. Ha.

Slowriderr,

I was wondering if you would be able to help me out with some pointers. I am going to make the attempt to try an create my own knob using Solidworks since I missed out on the opportunity to purchase one of your sweet knobs. Let me know if you are willing to help me.

Thanks

I know Solidworks as well. I wouldn't mind get some pointers, in terms of general dimension. Maybe a 2d drawing with orthographics and dimensions?!

Or send the file

Yes it would. The more i think about it though id really just need to know what threads are on the inside, everything else is pretty simple and that a pair of dial calipers can figure out..

Anyone know the thread?

Yea, that was mainly what I was looking for? I can't seem to find that answer anywhere. Do you think it matters where the thread starts compared to to the front and back of the knob? I want to make sure the knob is in the correct position when it is fully screwed on.

Yeah, might have to take off the stock one to figure that one out. I am wondering if the start of the thread is the same as the end of thread inside the knob?

Anybody wanna chime there on this?!

Have you started modeling anything? or are you still in the early early stages of measurements..?

Have not really started doing anything. It shouldnt take too long to design it once I get the right measurements. I was thinking of taking apart the stock one but I dont want to ruin a perfectly good shift knob.

Their was a used one in the black market for $15.. might be a good investment for taking apart.

Geeze Slowriderr, I've been looking and searching around for the automatic shift knob for my Acura TL 08 Type S and I've heard someone say you sell them. Do you still have any up for sale as of now?

Nice work man! I have been working with a neighbor that has a CNC Machine in his garage on a nice all billet knob for my A/T. I am not a fan of the stock and it will match the trim on the center of the dash.

Just found this thread! I am a avid solidworks/HASS user. At work we got a VF5 w/High speed Machining and a 210HRT 4th axis. What do you use for your cam software? My boss went the cheap rout and i VisualMill. Its great for what it is. i have only been machining for 1.5yrs so i am very inexperienced and all self taught. I am taking a Machining class in dec. to improve my skills.

I mostly design and make compression molds for long fiber reinforced thermoplastics but been toying with making shit for my bike and my tls.

I was wondering how you machined the cross hatch pattern? what type of tooling did u use? Not sure if you want to but how did you fixture the part for machining? any pics? I have a hard time with that and would like to learn.

Anyways, Great Work! I might have to do this to give myself a challenge
