My Luck Ran Out

Well, every day I have a 30 mile commute to and from work on the freeways of Phoenix and every day I see multiple wrecks...and tonight, my luck ran out. Several cars stopped very suddenly in front of me and I managed to stop in time to keep from hitting anyone, but the person behind me didn't and plowed into the back end of my car. Fortunately, the TL help up pretty well. Pictures are below. If anyone knows of a REALLY GOOD body shop in the Phoenix area, I'd appreciate the advice.

Looks like the damage is isolated to the bumper and the exhaust. All the surrounding metal seems to be straight, so I'm hoping this won't end up being too major.

Funny you should say that...I was actually wondering what the cost differential would be to put on a bumper from a Type-S and bolt up the Type-S quad exhaust....

it looks like the bumper and exhaust took most of the damage, which IMO is a good thing, no body filler in the car. try to go with they type S rear and then a quad exhaust setup, dont forget to go after depreciated value for your car, they might cut you a big enough check where you could get some wheels for your car ...

Bummer. Look in the BM, I think there may be a quad exhaust for sale. The rear bumper should be the same cost more or less.

Thanks for the reminder on depreciated value...I had forgotten about that.

I'll let you know...I'm not sure they're undamaged at this point though and I'm sure the last thing you want is damaged goods.

I just had the A-Spec suspension installed a couple of weeks ago...I was feeling pretty good about my car...maybe the car gods needed to remind me to be more humble.

You got lucky that you were not hit hard enough to push you into the car in front. Happened to me once; I managed to stop like you did, but the gal behind me pushed me hard into the truck in front of me. Felt like a piece of baloney in a sandwich.

Yeah...I was very lucky as far as that goes.

Lucky your car was not totaled. I hit someone 4 days ago and pushed their car under a truck. My 99TL totaled and the car I hit (98 saturn something). Good luck with repairs

Try Scottsdale Paint and Body off McDowell and Hayden. Acura North Scottsdale sent me to them - their collision center. They did a good job and even buffed out some scrathes near fender at no charge. They'll even add on the rear lip if you want to.

Man, that sucks, especially since you just did a round of mods. Thankfully you weren't hurt, and the car only sustained minor damage. The cost of a type-S bumper and exhaust should be the same as base, simply have the body shop order the S parts instead of the base parts.

BTW, was this the 101? FWIW, someone hit my car when it was parked in my employee parking garage. Luckily, he left a note, but there was more underbody damage than I thought and it ended up being over 2K in damages so he went through his insurance. I had to have the rear bumper replaced just as it appears you will too. The car was in the shop for about a week. Your car will be safe as I noticed quite a few Benzes, Rovers and Beamers in there at Scottsdale Paint and Body as the dealerships use them as their collision center as well. Hope you're ok

That sucks but at least no-one was hurt and it could've been a lot worse. Definitely a hassle but also an opportunity to get some new mods

Damn, sorry to hear that. The exact same thing happened to me exactly 2 months ago. The TL stops FAST when it has to! I had $6K of damage to my car, rear floor pan got mangled as did the exhaust system.

Good luck to you, I had to fight every day with the other drivers insur co to get parts on my car REPLACED, not REPAIRED!

Same thing happened to me back in May of this year. Car was rear ended by an Isuzu Rodeo. His insurance company (Geico) was trying to be cheap. I was arguing with their adjuster over the phone. Their estimate was $4700. I called my insurance company (State Farm) and the damge was $6700.

It was a learning experience for me. Now i know that if i'm in that situation again, I'll just go through my insurance company. They get the money back through subrogation form the other insurance company if the other driver is at fault. I pay good money for my insurance policy. I shouldn't have to argue with another guy's idiot insurance company.

I was on the 101 when I was hit...seems to be the place!

Anyway, just got back from getting 4 estimates. Initially, it looks like it'll be in the $1,100 to $2,000 range. I drop it off at a shop near my home on Monday morning. Hopefully, all will work out.

Don't forget to have their insurance cover your rental car and have the shop do any necessary alignments/balancing. After I got hit, I had vibrations all at 60mph-70mph. Can't wait till the 101 mess is complete.

Good luck with the replacement!

How much do you think he can get for depreciated value

So, here's the update - I'm not "updgrading" to the TL-S exhaust and bumper. The price differential on the bumper was minimal, but the damage to the exhaust was to only one side and it can be replaced without replacing the whole thing. It was going to cost me an additional $1,000 to get all the additional TL-S exhaust parts I would need and I just couldn't justify it...oh well. At least I'll have my car back in once piece.

You have no idea how much it pains me to hear the words "Go Cats" right now given that I am a graduate of both ASU and BYU.

Apparently, I need to quarantine myself because I've passed off my bad "car karma" to a pair of my co-workers. They had gone to lunch and were returning (in the black GTI shown below) when the elderly driver of a 2008 Accord attempted to cross four lanes of traffic cross-ways without checking for on-coming traffic. My friends in the GTI never even had a chance at stopping...fortunately, everyone walked away with only minor bumps and bruises. The Accord driver was cited for his role in this mess.

sorry to hear about what happened man! I guess you're done with your body shop hunt. I was going to suggest Competition Paint and Body. A friend recommended them to me and they seem to do a good job. I haven't had my car done there for anything though.
