my drive to indiana

so heading to indiana I get pulled over in Clark County Ohio. This was a speeding violation 81 in a 65mph zone. Truthfully, I had my car on cruise control for the past 2-2.5 hours. I had it set to 70mph. Upon coming down a hill the officer clocked me at 81. Does the car actually travel 11mph faster down hill? That was pretty weird

I didnt complain and accepted this. Would anyone know what the cost of this violation is?

There's no fine on this ticket. I have to call them mon or tues to see how much they feel i should pay. ( My thoughts )

what annoys me more is I was on my last 2 hours of a 12 hour drive and BAMM!!!! pulled over. = (

Sorry to hear. The cost of the violation depends on the state and county. You should be able to find it online.

how steep was the hill? ... 11mph above 70 sounds a little extreme to me

unless this hill was at a 40 degree angle. I dont know how I could of accelerated that fast. I didnt even have my foot on the gas peddle.
Matter of fact, I had both feet on my seat.

Now I have to clean all the dead bugs off the car.

A 10% grade is extreem ( 10' drop in 100 feet ) even at a 7% grade the car will gain speed. but will loose it and go back to the cruise setting when you hit the flat. Cruise will only accellerate to maintain a speed not decellerate to maintain it .

Even the brake logic in our cars acctivates when your going down hill and use the brake a bit but not linked to the cruise as far as I can tell.

I live in Ohio, was it the Ohio Highway Patrol, or a local/county?

Highway patrol here LOVES to write tickets, even for 5MPH over, it's ridicilous.

Doesn't suprised me. I have several neighbors who are deputy county sherriffs, they HATE the Highway patrol as well. All the do in Ohio is drive the governor around, and write traffic tickets.

on most tickets you have to wait for the court to send a real ticket with notice to appear and the fine listed on it--cops dont know the exact fine
when you get the notice:
you can pay the fine and done with it, pay the fine and get a court date to contest, or stand in line for hours to contest without putting up the 200 dollars

never had my car go 11 mph faster on a downhill in cruise control mode, never more than a few!
A: there may be something wrong with your car
cruise control should have slowed down when a few mph over- its goal is steady speed
B: cop got the wrong car- anyone next to you?

test the car- if you can get it to act up you can get it fixed- take proof of repair to court and hope for the best

I dont think my cruise control is faulty. There was black car to my left that passed me a few seconds before I saw the officer way up ahead in the median. Maybe he got him and stopped me instead?

fighting this in court will cost me more than paying the fine.
I think the fine is 180 based on their county website.

Also, your feet were criss-crossed in your lap? Maybe you do deserve the ticket

Ohio troopers are tough they write a LOT of tickets! It is one of the few states that I do not speed in and I live there, really not even 5 over! Sorry to hear about your ticket.

Hey hey...good news is once you got to Indiana, I'm sure you didn't get too much trouble. Police here are pretty nice actually. I was going 14 mph over and was let off with a verbal warning. WTF. Thank god though.

I haven't been to the left side of the state on I-70 in a while...When did ODOT put in a hill on I-70???

I've lived in Ohio almost all my life and State Troopers are "By-the-Book"

Gotta give it up to Ohio, I think we ranked #2 in "Tickets Issued." Losing only to New Jersey.

Hopefully you can just waive the ticket and not have to come back and go to court.

Hmm, I use my cruise control all the time on the highway. My speed stays the same whether I go uphill or downhill.

Please recognize as well that most spedometers are off by at least a few MPH even from the factory. If youve changed tires, tire size, etc the speedo will be thrown off even more. So you may have had it set at 70, but actually been doing 76 or 77 (6-8% off) and then the hill could have added the last few MPH. Recognize as well that this is NOT an excuse to try in court, because negligance is not an excuse with a petty crime. Pay the fine and watch your speed!

Thank you for your comment. I'm definitely not using that as an excuse. Based on all the small factors involved, it made me wonder if I was traveling at that speed or if I was the intended target of the laser etc..

I've been down several long, steep hills with the cruise set at 70 and never had it vary more than 1 or 2 MPH. Either you miss-set it at 80 instead of 70, you have a severe malfunction in your cruise control causing it to accelerate beyond what you set, or your theory about him clocking the guy who passed you is valid.

I've even disconnected the cruise control going down a long, steep hill while going 70 mph and the car decelerates (foot not on gas pedal). (Too much wind resistance).

I thought that in a lot of states over 15 above was "reckless driving". Guess not.

I wouldnt put it past the possibility he was fast asleep, the radar alert woke him up and by then he only saw your vehicle.

New Jersey Cops sucks....basically everywhere but my town....I drive between Indiana and NJ a few times a year and have never had any problems with highway patrol...usually my radar picks them up almost a mile before I get to them. From what I remember from other tickets, anything like 1-14 mph over the speed limit is about 200 dollars.

I got one of those in Indiana and thats what it was, even though I was going 9 over (Indiana is really nice if you live in the state, not so much outside the state. A kid I go to school with has been pulled over 25 times and only gotten 3 tickets....each time he got pulled over he was going at least 10 mph over the speed limit, though I have seen him get warnings for going 20 mph over the speed limit twice on the same road within 20 minutes...apparently the police dont check their computers when they issue warnings.)

Either way that sucks, go to court and fight it. Indiana has like a deferral program where you pay 220 and if you do not get a ticket for 6 months its gets expunged off your license....the best part of that is your insurance ONLY gets notified if you fail the course and get another ticket within the 6 month period.
