Was my car in an accident? Or just cheaply made?

So i have had my tl for about 5 months now and NO major problems, Axel broke and needed a new o2 sensor.

When using the air in the summer and from time to time now (fall in Jersey) I have a very disturbing rattling sound from the front of the car. last about 10 seconds. Its usually when i start the car and put the air on about medium or car idles in park. Today I got my mail at the front of my development and put my car in park, got out got the mail and as I'm walking back i heard that shaking rattling noise worse then ever!

Im going to take a video tomorrow and upload it..

My question being was this car in an accident? b I opened the hood and was able to move the radiator in the front of my car with my hand.. which is more then likely that rattling sound that i get.. or is this car just cheap.. aka a honda? Could be wrong but i don't think radiators should move at all...

Yes you are wrong, thats not cheaply made your radiator is designed. That is 100% normal and no that is not what is causing your noise every Honda Accord and Acura TL is designed that way where the radiator has some play in it. If you look its held in place with pegs that seat in the holes that are insulated.
Your noise is likely either your serpentine belt or one of the pulleys. Its relatively common especially during cold start for this to occur if one or both of those are going bad. Either way its a pretty cheap and easy fix (if thats your problem).

not trying to be a ass, but why are you asking us if your car has been in a accident?

lol? you, as the owner, should be the one aware of your cars history.

you should try running a carfax on your car to find out of it's been in a accident or not.

Carfax isn't ALWAYS accurate either. There's plenty of used cars that are sold with CLEAN histories, but have been damaged before.

yea but it sure as heck is more accurate than us trying to guess based on your symptoms

you really wanna know? check all your body panel for VIN stickers. if it doesnt have it, its been replaced. check for edge gaps and paint mismatch, and also check for non-oem parts.

heres a quick way to check if you need a new serpentine belt. (this is not recommended more than once) pour a very small amount of brake fluid on the belt when running, see if the sound disappears or fades. if it does, problem solved-time for a new belt

Acuras are not the world's quietest cars. Your radiator is designed to give a bit. If the noise is related to your radiator it could be that one of the rubber bushings that hold it in place is worn out. Turn the car off and shake the radiator by hand to see if that's whats causing the noise.

Personally I would be more concerned with the axle breaking. How many miles are on your car?

LOL This thread is straight comedy.

OP - You follow up "no major problems" with a broken axle and jacked O2 sensor. Ummm...

Run a CarFax. No, it's not 100%, but if they had any work professionally done on the car, it should be obvious. If it doesn't show any accidents and you still suspect it has been wrecked, start checking body panels as suggested.

It's obvious that you're no mechanic, so if you have a rattle, take it somewhere to get diagnosed.

lawl you'd need a new belt either way after performing this test..

anyways, check mounts and what not. as mentioned radiators have some degree of give and are not bolted tight to the chassis.

if you own the car, drive it, clean it, see it everyday and it doesn't 'obviously' doesn't look like it was in a accident, what makes you think we would be able to tell you? we can't even see the car in person lol

"or is this car just cheap.. aka a honda?"

Last time I checked Honda's weren't cheaply made... But nice assumption. Maybe you should have bought a "tough" dodge.

Screw his friends! lol His Honda will run circles around their german makes in the reliability AND resale dept anyday of the week.

Oh an OP I didn't assume if your car was in a wreck before. I just stated the obvious about carfax that TheChamp called me out on. "Captain Obvious" I love A-zine.

1) You live in Jersey, anything is possible. Maybe your car was used by the mob.

2) Are you sure that rattle isn't from the heatshield underneath? Simple fix.

You shouldn't turn on the air immediately after turning on the car, it causes too much wear and tear. Give the engine a few minutes to warm up before you put the extra load of the a/c on it.

Really? A cold car automatically revs a few rpms higher anyhow to help with warming up, emissions, etc etc. I was told it was primarily for aiding in "lighting" off the cats for emissions purposes. A cold start is hard on a car anyway, so i don't see how having the ac on during start up will hurt anymore. Just my uneducated guess.

I didn't think the axle was so bad, but the way it broke was strange me, driving 5 mph and the car just stops moving? I mean imagine i was on a highway and could no accelerate? Tow truck driver said thank god i was going to walmart :roll eyes:

Who knows i have a feeling the transmission is going to be a problem next i may make a thread later on what happened today. Another not so exciting day. thanks for everyones input.

Guys....REALLY.....

Can't you all just help out a new, 19 year old member without raking him over the coals? He comes here for help and advise and a lot of you treat him like crap.

It's embarrassing to read this thread....

Hi!

BTW OP, I would seriously go back to the dealership to see if they'll replace your axle or both of them as a goodwill. BTW I didn't see if it was stated that it was bought from an Acura dealer or an independent one. Either way I'd take it to a trusted mechanic an have a look-see all over the car. I know diagnostics fee at the Acura dealership can costs some money, but it'd be worth it. Good luck to you and a carfax doesn't always show ALL the history sometimes, especially if its not reported.

Maybe I should've stated this in my first post to this thread, definitely wasn't trying to give you a hard time at all. Sorry if my threads came off mean (i didn't think they did) but definitely don't want you to feel offended. Sorry Steven Bell.
