Unhappy

Tonight on my way home I picked up a hitch hiker. Yes, I know, stupid move. He was a brink ass local which got in a fight with his wife. What made me pull over? I don't know.
When he got out I noticed the knife in his back pocket. About 10", like a carving knife. I also noticed the big hole it had made in my seat. I dint know what yo do, but I didn't want to anger a drunk guy with a big knife in rural Oregon. So I went home and cried a little. Then wrote this.
Should I hit this guy up during the day and show him what he did? Or just have it fixed out of pocket because I was nice enough to help out a hitch hiker?
Sad day

Be happy the knife went in your seat and not in your chest.

It would be hard to pull the knife out from my seat to stab into me.

wow that sucks for you.

but uhhhh.... you decided to pick up a complete stranger, drunk one at that, with a big knife in 'rural oregon'

and this was probably around what time, close to midnight?

i'm guessing you were trying to be a "good Samaritan" but honestly if i drove by i would have said "fuck that".

ok maybe if it was a chick with a tight looking body and nice long hair i might think twice about it, but i still wouldn't pick that bitch up for shit!!

its night time, it's random people you don't even know. why the F would you even think about picking them up.

idk man i just hope you learned your lesson on this. i just don't see what positive you could have gotten out of giving a hitch-hiker a free ride. a MALE one at that??

I've always felt bad for not picking hitch hikers up.. then I realize I like being alive. they can find their own way. after all, busses were invented for a reason.

Sorry to you for what happened. It's unfair that you committed an act of kindness only to have your property damaged. But keep your head up. Good things will happen to good hearted people.

If I were you, I would show the hitch hiker the damage he has caused. It was probably unintentional and was probably unaware of the damage hes done. I would go there when hes sober to explain your story and bring it to his attention. Hopefully the two of you can come to a resolution where he pays for the damage. Its not always a happy ending but its better to try and fail than to have never tried at all, right?

I don't think you're wrong for your actions, reaching out to help someone is awesome. Why it seems so foreign to so many is a sad indicator of how pathetic we've become as a nation. Can't pick up someone walking home drunk? At least he wasn't driving. Jesus, not everyone is an axe-murderer. Get outside a little more, people.

Although it was cool of you to pick him up, I think it might be lost on him and you to have it fixed or anything. He's already having problems at home. Although this may be a great way to get his mind off of it and see if he can help. I'd say get it checked on how much it would be to fix and consider your options then.

Lets not turn this thread to a debate. This situation could go either way.

I say good job in picking someone up. If it wasn't for people like you, then there wouldn't be a Michael Oher or the movie the Blindside.

Ask him if he can help pay for it, if not, leave it/fix it.

I say just bring it to his attention. Tell him to just be aware of what he's got in his pockets, you got a hole from a knife he had in his back pocket. Just make it sound like you want him to be aware. Take it from there see what he says, dont force the issue though.

i commend you for lending a hand to someone in need, and maybe picking up hikers is the norm out in oregon...but you couldn't pay me any amount of money to pick up someone in my area.

i've had people off the street try and get into my car while driving in the city. HBO's "the wire" wasn't a fabrication.

sorry about your seat.

^^^I agree. Nice job trying to help someone out. But drunk, at night and with a knife. Just let it be a cheap lesson to you. Growing up in Miami, we have a tendency not to trust anyone and always assume they have a knife in their pocket, or worse. Not a nice way to live...but it is what it is.

About your seat. They sell leather repair kits, which I would look into to see if it'll do for you. If not, a new seat cover might be in order. Maybe a good time to go to a place that does custom interiors and start transitioning into an umber interior

You were nice for picking him up...now don't ever do that again! I trust people when I know them- I don't pick up hitchers, ever. That's how carjackings can happen (it's the one that ruins it for the other 99, but I digress...)

You likely won't have too much success getting said hitchhiker to pay for your seat damage as he can always say it was there before he got in the car- he really has no liability from a legal standpoint (however, he might be nice and pay, which I think is highly unlikely). See if a leather shop can repair it- you'd be amazed at what they can do these days (vs. getting a new cover from Acura).

Chalk it up to a life experience, and be careful out there.

I live in Oregon and I'm familiar with the area you're in.

What part of your brain actually thought this was a good idea?

There are absolute nutcases out there on meth and who have severe emotional issues, they can and will snap over absolutely nothing and lash out. I volunteer several times a month helping out with vets who have such issues, I've seen this for myself.

Please be more careful, I really don't want to read about something terrible in the paper about some Good Samaritan getting stabbed by some drugged out hobo.

One time my friend drove to the side to "pick up hitch hikers".

When the hitch hiker got close to the car, my friend floored it and loose rocks and gravel flew at the guys.

That's just plain mean lol

Hope you get your seat fixed up man thats a huge drag.

Consider yourself lucky. I feel sorry for people walking down the street but will NEVER pick them up. Think of this as a lesson on why picking up strangers is a bad idea.

Well the individual you picked up sounds like an upstanding citizen so I'd just go ahead and contact him. I'm sure he'll cover the cost of the repair

A Hitch Hiker!! Seriously?? Those are dangerous. If you can Whip his ass I would Fuck that Nigga up and then Put his face in the whole and tell him "since I know ur ass is Poor that Beat down was payback for what you did". If you can't beat his ass then I would cry a little more and try and fix it without saying shit

The community I live in is tiny. Like, 5-600 people. More than likely I went to school with this guys kids. For me to NOT recognize this dude was the weird part. Its not like I live in LA. I live in Dixonville. Not that that made it ok for me to pick him up.
Its nice to see how much of a shithole our society has become, where no one can or will trusts anyone
