My Acura Tl Has A Scratch :(

Today washing my car, a friend of mine opens my driver door and accidently hit the door on a metal hose hanger. The scratch is about a inch long and went down to the primer. I wasn't upset just sad Now I'm assuming that this can't be buffed out because I can take my nail and rub accross the scratch and there is a indentation. What are your guys opinion on this matter? Do you believe the entire door has to be sanded down and repainted or just buffed out? List some price ranges for me. Thanks guys.

u may be just be able to have a clearcoat sprayed on that door which could potentially gloss over the scratch and make it disappear. I would take it to a detailer then body shop for the lowdown on it.

Some detailers can work near miracles.

Yeah, check your local detailer. Your Acura dealer may also know of a body person who can airbrush and repair the damage. We try and keep'em nice, but things do happen beyond our control.

I noticed a paint chip today about 2 mils thick down to the primer

In your case make your buddy pay. My friend threw a football and bounced of my LCD(computer, not car) and I would have charged him every last penny had it broke, he was my best friend, but if he breaks my property...

If you ever grow up, you will find that friends can be more valuable than money.

I got a scratch too (see my other thread) in my WDP pearl... I got the "scuffs" off with detail spray stuff and clay bar but I still have a small down to the primer scratch/scuff left over which I assume I can fix with touch up.

That's nothing, my friend was sitting in the passenger seat and starts changing gears and I wasn't holding the clutch down. Luckily the engine was off but I still got pissed for grinding the gears and told him to stop immediately. I would've done the same if something happened to car, make him pay to the last penny.

oh well i went to a body shop in my area. the guy quotes me around $800.00. Because they have to remove pieces off my car, ie: door handle, side molding, etc.. trying to justify why it will cost that much. He then said if you dont want to spend that kind of money get touch-up paint. How much is touch-up paint? Can I get it from Acura or Honda?

I was looking to repairing a scratch/dent at http://www.fix-n-chips-auto.com/our_process.phtml instead of repainting the panel. I've seen similar processes like the one at http://www.chipsaway.com/why.html that you may want to look into.

Check out his great website. www.autopia.org. Take a digital picture of the scratch and post it on the forum. The guys on the site are amazing. They have professional detailers post on the forum. I purchased a cyclo buffer and with the combinations of products reckommened on the forum my car looks amazing. I got a scratch on the roof a few weeks ago ( a dirt clod from a dump truck "biffed" off my roof at 75mph leaving a white scuffmark) I plan on buffing it out this weekend, I hope all goes well. I'll take some pictures and post before and afters.

You should be able to get it done by a paint detailer for less than $100 (probably more like $60, to be specific). It will take him maybe an hour and it will be impossible to tell it was ever there if he is even halfway good.

I am sure that your scratch is very similar to mine, mine isn't an inch long, but it went down the primer nonetheless. I took it to acura and they said it would be $1000 (yep a grand) because they said they had to basically repaint the whole door and match it with the quarter panel. sounded like a rip to me so I told them no thanks. I just kept applying touch up paint to make it as least noticiable as possible. After a few weeks it doesn't bother me much anymore.

I went to a body shop they quoted me 800 dollars, the dealer most likely will charge me more.

yep,

but because you got WDP, it should be very easy to mask with touch up paint, white and black are the easiest colors to conceal scratches with touch up paint.

but for me, I have AM, and it took me a few weeks off and on until I was satisifed with the results. I still can see the scratch now, but it isn't as noticiable as before.

Get something that comes in a bottle and use a toothpick to flood the chip... let it fill the chip to the edges and then let dry without touching. Then redo this as many times as it takes to get it nice and flush (a little bit raised is good) you can then use a polish to level it or just live with that and wait a while to wax it (2 weeks or so)

You probably wont use the brush... toothpicks or the torn end of a cardboard match work more accurately. If you have a large area to paint brush is better.

That is F'in bullshit. I caught a parked trailor's hitch in our SUV's front wheel well (wife's Chevy Tahoe) - while backing my boat into a tight spot. Dent and paint damage... Damage to about a 3 square inch area. Chevy dealer fixed it for $185. I challenge anyone to find it - I don't remember which side it happened on...

Get more quotes.

I have two different touch up pens and also the touch up paint.

I got one touch up pen off of ebay and another at handaaccessories.com. they run about $8 I think. but of course if you buy on ebay, they gouge shipping costs. my total ebay cost was $15.95. The cost of touch up paint from acura was $5 - $6.

yep it is bullshit. I was quoted $1000 for a similar scratch not even an inch long, such a ripoff.

with my Mustang I had a tiny chip in the paint on the edge of the quarter panel about the size of the grain of salt, and this guy at Macco wanted to charge $250 to fix it because they said they had to repaint the quarter panel and match. I went in the the manager and he just touched it up, and I could even tell were the chip was after a while.

also forgot to mention the touch up pen on ebay is a little better because it also has a clear coat touch up on the other end of the pen.

if the Scratch is not deep enough to put your finger nail in it than your ok, i learn this at the body shop last week when a buddy of mine pick up his tundra and notice a long Scratch on the hood of the car. they try to bluff it out with water, wax, polish but nothing work. so what they did was sand that area down with a wet 1000 grit sand paper in a circle motion and then do the same with 2000 grit sand paper remember to use water or wet the area of sanding. after they took the bluffer and bluff it to a shine. look very new and i couldn't even tell it was there.

this is only if the Scratch is not that deep and you can bluff it away. sand it then bluff it.

good luck.

that is your best option but to the unexperienced you can do some serious damage to your paintjob if you do it incorrectly

Well I have a scratch that's enough for my fingernail and I'm heading to the detail artist that my dealer has come onsite on Wednesday. I'll let you know tomorrow evening how things turn out and the price.
